Hello ! . Lianna and I are doing the 12 dips for Christmas in aid of the charity SHOUT, in memory of our late husbands Brendan and Fergus who both died from cancer. Headache

A common cause of headache is the liver energy surging up into the head and is called liver yang rising.

This type of headache is caused by the emotions. The liver is associated with anger wether it be repressed or manifested.. when the emotions are stuck the liver energy becomes unregulated.

This type of headache typically manifest behind the eyes or on one side of the head.

When the liver Yang rises usually it’s because the yin of the body is not strong enough to anchor it down.

To nourish your yin you can;

Do yin yoga
Meditate
Have quiet time
Get adequate sleep
Sleep been 1pm and 3 pm to nourish liver blood.
Eat yin foods including:

Seaweed
Pear, banana, grape, watermelon
Apple potatoes , tofu, cucumber
Yoghurt , spinach , squash, turnip

These practices will soothe your emotions, soothe your liver and nourish your yin .

Shoulder pain/ back pain:

There are a lot of shoulder and lower back complaints at the moment.

It is often caused by cold . The cold easily invades the body at this time of year, driven in by the wind that is common in spring. More so if you tend to have a lot of cold in your body.

Cold causes limited mobility, stiffness and pain. It can commonly wake you up at night .

Make sure you wrap up when you go out.
Include warming spices in your diet.
Consume Ginger tea.
Hot water bottle on the affected joint.
Keep the joint moving with gentle exercise to ensure the energy and blood do not stagnate.

Massage- has the wonderful ability to soothe aching muscles but also to soothe the mind. We hold emotional trauma in our bodies and often within our muscles and joints.

We think of the neck and shoulders as common places for stress and tension but the hips also carry this emotional stress.

In Louise Hays famous book -you can heal your body -she relates hip problems to a fear of moving forward in life.

I incorporate the acupuncture channels in all my massage treatments. Each channel receiving a boost of circulation and vitality...

Arthritis - sore, aching ,heavy ,numb tingling, swollen joints.

Affecting just about any and every joint in the body.

Why does this happen ?
Genetics, diet , environment, stress.

In Chinese medicine we consider pathogens cold, damp, heat, wind and pheglm to be the problem and call this pattern bi syndrome.

These pathogens invade your body either from the outside or accumulate internally.

We have the perfect climate in Ireland to create damp and cold within the body. This is amplified if you live in a damp house.

The pathogens invade easily if your body is deficient. Old injuries where the circulation of blood and qi (energy pronounced chee) is impaired are ideal for cold and damp to settle.

What to do?

Diet- damp can enter from our environment but also from weak digestion. Eating foods that are hard to digest, weaken digestion and damp in created and stored in the joints.

Keep warm during your menstrual cycle as the body is more prone to damp invasion at this time, so if you like sea swimming, avoid doing this during your period.

If you do have old injuries massage and acupuncture with moxibustion will keep the joint strong.

Prevention is easier than cure!.

Childhood stomach pain- children often complain of a sore tummy, frequently it is due to cold and weak digestion.

The cold comes from eating too many cold foods. Raw vegetables and fruit are cold but food can also be cold in its nature such as bananas and yogurt. Calpol is cold in nature and can be overused. Lots of dilute juice throughout the day weakens the digestion too.

Whole foods can also be difficult to digest and we should hold off on introducing these until after 7 yrs.

Kids often run around without adequate clothing , their stomachs and backs exposed, allowing external cold to enter the body.

Moxibustion on the stomach warms the digestion , strengthening it and expels cold. If your child will take some fresh ginger and lemon tea that will also help. Avoid snacking between meals, allowing the stomach to rest and opt for porridge and soups instead of cold alternatives.

Leg cramps- many of you suffer excruciating leg cramps particularly at night time.
In Chinese medicine we say this is due to blood deficiency. The blood returns to the liver when we lie down and sleep so less is circulating in the muscles and tendons.
Magnesium can be helpful. Massage is also an effective treatment with lasting results.

Moxibustion is the burning of the herb mugwort. I frequently use it in my treatments to
Expel cold and warm the kidneys
Soothe aching joints
Heal bones after fracture, sprain and breaks
Tonify or replenish the blood
Turn a breech baby (see photograph number 1)
Improve digestion by warming and expelling cold.

A wonderful tonic for the body.

Cupping is a great treatment to loosen tight muscles. It removes cellular debris and improves blood circulation to the muscle. I use it in combination with massage and acupuncture for pain relief.

Cupping can also be used on the upper back to treat cough or chest infections. The cups clear the lungs, of what Chinese medicine calls damp.
