Myths and Truth About Massage
1. All massages are basically the same.
🚫 Definitely not true! There are many different types of massage, and each has its own role to play. A spa massage is designed to relieve stress and help reduce overall muscle fatigue. Sports massage is useful for all types of athletes - from Olympians to weekend runners. A physiotherapist’s massage is designed to treat, restore, and reduce pain or movement restrictions.
2. Massage therapy can help restore mobility.
✅ True!
3. Massage promotes the migration and spread of cancer cells.
🚫 Not true! Most oncologists agree that massage therapy can be very helpful for people who are being treated for cancer.
4. Massage helps fight depression.
✅ True! The Touch Research Institute at the University of Miami School of Medicine has discovered that massage therapy helps reduce the symptoms of anxiety and depression by affecting the biochemistry of our body.
More than 500 men, women, and children with a history of depression and anxiety had their levels of cortisol (a stress hormone) measured before and after the massage. After numerous studies, researchers found that massage therapy helped participants reduce cortisol levels by more than 53 percent.
Basically, massage therapy helps reduce cortisol levels, which allows our body to produce more serotonin and increases our chances of fighting depression and anxiety. So, whether you suffer from constant anxiety and depression, or occasionally experience stress, massage therapy can help.
5. The effect of the massage is temporary.
🚫 Not true! Regular, scheduled massage is the beginning of a healthy lifestyle and an effective lifeline for those suffering from chronic pain or numbness.
6. Massage therapy helps people who have hypertension - a disease of high blood pressure.
✅ True! For example, in 2006 A study published in the journal Alternative and Complementary Medicine examined the antihypertensive effects of several types of massage. After reviewing data from before and after 150 study participants who underwent massage treatments, the researchers found that relaxing massage lowered blood pressure.
7. The next day after the massage we should not feel any pain, if it hurts - the massage was done WRONG.
🚫 Absolutely not true! Many customers believe that following e.g. Trigger massage, anti-cellulite or deep muscle massage should not be felt the next day - very wrong. Professional massage applied to relieve stiffness, relax tense muscles, improve movement mobility is felt the next day after the session and there is NO need to be afraid of it. It's like a "workout."
8. Massage therapy reduces migraines and headaches.
✅ Absolutely true! A study published in 2010 found that people with migraines who received a massage once a week had much less and less frequent headaches, and they were much better able to sleep than those who did not have a massage.
There are many factors that cause headaches and migraines, but the main ones are high tension in the neck and shoulders, so I often recommend a full body massage. However, migraines can also be caused by muscle tension in the forehead and occiput, so it is very important to focus on these areas and the jaw area during the massage.
9. Massage therapy should NOT be given to pregnant women as there is a risk of miscarriage.
🚫 Not true! Massage was once thought to release hormones that can cause preterm birth, but it is now known that this is not true. In fact, prenatal massage can help expectant mothers reduce pain, stress hormones, and allow relaxation.
10. Massage reduces foot pain.
✅ True! Reflexology massage is based on the idea that different points on the feet are responsible for different parts of the body. Thus, during this therapy, strong and precise massages of the reflex points in the feet, divided according to the energy flow zones in the body, not only relax and revitalize tired legs, but also improve blood circulation, reduce tension and stress.
