History made! The u15 boys soccer team have become the first SMGS team to reach the Munster Final 🏆
Match report -
In a wild semi-final in Douglas, SMGS beat a very strong Pres side 5-3 to reach the Munster Final. After a tight first half, Pres had the lead at half-time. Into the second, SMGS came out of the traps with substitutes Tiarnan Vaughan and Alex Healy impacting the game. As we searched for an equiliser, space opened up for Pres who were somehow denied a second by a sensational save by Super Ryan O’Leary. Blarney grew in confidence backed by a brilliant defensive display by Ciarán Noonan and Shane Dineen. Finally, we got level from a moment of class from Dylan Barry. As we pushed for a winner, we were hit by a sucker punch to fall behind with 2 minutes left. The boys never gave up, and the excellent Ben Fitzgibbon lofted a last-gasp free kick into the box that was deemed over the line by the ref. In extra time, SMGS pushed on and had the lead from the penalty spot after the brilliant Jack O’Sullivan rounded the goalkeeper. Two further goals were added either side of a Pres goal by Jack Donovan and Alex. What a day for players and management of Mr Murphy and Mr Twomey.

U15 Hurlers reach Munster Final

SMGS Blarney 2-12
St Declan’s Kilmacthomas 2-9

Our U15 hurlers continued their great year by beating Kilmacthomas in a rip roaring semi final on Midleton 4G.

Playing with the aid of a gale in the first half Blarney raced into a lead. Points from Darragh O’Driscoll, Zack Brady and a goal from Jack Donovan. Discipline was their Achilles heal in the first half, with frees allowing Kilmacthomas into the game and checking Blarney’s momentum. Blarney held a 2-7 to 0-6 lead at half time, but the big question was would it be enough.

The tough playing conditions continued in the second half and Kilmacthomas chipped away at the deficit. Two quick points and a goal had the margin back to 2. This is when the mettle of these Blarney boys was put to the test. Great character, determination and teak toughness from all players steadied the ship. Strong defending from Conor Staples and Zack Brady and Edward O’Herlihy and points from Garret O’Sullivan, Evan O’ Mahony and Jack Donovan reestablished control. St Declan’s goaled with 6 minutes remaining and although they laid seige to the Blarney goal in the final stages, SMGS held out to advance to the final.

Unlucky to the u14 boys soccer team who were beaten in the semi-final of the Cork Shield vs Carrigaline Community School, despite being the better team. In a game that was dominated largely by SMGS, we were unable to make the breakthrough and found ourselves in extra time. In extra time, we maintained control of the game and were finally rewarded after an excellent volley from Matthew Dunlea. Carrigaline soon replied from a free-kick. Into the last 5 minutes, the visitors were awarded a controversial penalty that separated the sides. Huge credit to lads who were outstanding over the tournament and particularly today.

We are delighted to congratulate our Robotics Team on their fantastic success in the First Lego League competition today.

The team reached the quarter-finals in the robot section, which is a wonderful achievement and a testament to all of their hard work, creativity, teamwork, and dedication.

They also received the Judges’ Breakthrough Award, which recognises a team that has shown the greatest improvement or progress in an area of the Core Values. This is a very special award and highlights the team’s growth, perseverance, and positive attitude throughout the competition. Well done to all who participated and to their Mentors.

U15 Hurlers March on!

SMGS 2-12
St Brogans 3-2

Our U15 hurlers had an impressive win against St Brogan's Bandon in the Munster D Quarter Final. Playing with a strong wind in the first half, Blarney were first out of the blocks registering points from Shane Dineen and Darragh O'Driscoll. Joe Leary's meandering run through the Brogans defence resulted in the first green flag of the day. Brogans gradually gained a foothold in the game and registered a goal of their own from a 21 yard free. Points from Jake Shakeshaft and Whitechurch GAA marksmen, Garrett O'Sullivan and Jamie Cremin O'Riordan, helped Blarney to a commanding half time lead.

In the second half a wind assisted Brogans came into the game more scoring an early goal and point. Resolute defending from Grenagh's Conor Moriarty, Dylan Twomey, Evan O'Mahony and Tadhg O'Connell kept any potential Brogans comeback at bay. Blarney converted only 2 scoring opportunities in the second half giving them plenty to work on prior to their semifinal next week against Waterford opposition.
