MY FIVE YEAR STATEGIC PLAN FOR SOUTH DONEGAL AS COUNCILLOR
I am fortunate to be in a position to dedicate myself full time to delivering this long term plan for the people of South Donegal. I have handed over the running of my businesses to my son in recent years, and I plan to spend the next five years working full time in the Council. I am absolutely determined to use my contacts in the Council, the Government and the EU to develop South Donegal properly. Not many current Councillors or candidates are available to work full time in the Council, but I definitely am and its important to make that clear to the people upfront. I need your support in the upcoming local elections to help me deliver this plan to the people of South Donegal:
1. Improve the capacity of the ambulance service in South Donegal, so there are sufficient ambulances and crews available to deliver an essential emergency service to all of the people of South Donegal from Glencolmcille, to Killybegs, to Donegal Town and Bundoran.
2. Introduce an Air Ambulance service to that the patients with critical injuries and health issues can be taken to the nearest emergency department within that vital one hour window. This is absolutely essential given the diverse terrain, road conditions and weather in South Donegal.
3. Promote and develop world class facilities in Killybegs Port to provide long term jobs for our young people, in the fishing, seafood and marine engineering sectors.
4. Get the EU and the Government to recognise that Killybegs Port is of strategic importance to the whole region.
5. Install a new Synchro lift and extend the pier in Killybegs, so the local marine engineering companies can grow, and complete globally for business.
6. Promote and develop Donegal Town and the surrounding region as a world class centre of excellence for biomedical science, with top class jobs for our young people.
7. Build on the success of the Wild Atlantic Way, and develop South Donegal as a world class tourist destination through Government and with EU support, and a reduced VAT rate for local tourist businesses post Brexit.
8. Work with the Government and the EU to make sure that Irish Fishing vessels maintain access to UK waters after Brexit.
9. Get the Government to provide a proper state sponsored and managed child care service for working families. This is absolutely essential for young families to be able to live and prosper in the region.
10. Make sure that the Government and the EU look after our small farmers so they can continue to farm the land in South Donegal, and diversify into new areas so they can sustain themselves into the future.
