Cockhill Celtic 2-1 Bonagee Utd
Cockhill Celtic edged a titanic title tussle at the Charlie O'Donnell Sports Grounds to reignite their own title aspirations, while denying Bonagee from winning the title today.
After a cagey opening period Cockhill had the first chance on 11mins when Adam McCarron's looping header went narrowly wide, before Peter Doherty's shot was deflected into the side netting on 15mins.
Bonagee were stung into action and almost took the lead on 26mins. Tony McNamee controlled and his curling effort from the left side of the box hit the post, bounced across the goal and away. Soon after Conor Black's shot was charged down by Peter Doherty.
Bonagee threatened again on 30mins even McNamee's long throw was flicked on but Jamie Lynagh's shot was deflected wide.
Cockhill broke the deadlock on 37mins when Luke Rudden controlled Fionn McClure's cross from the left brilliantly in the box before firing low across Oisin Cannon.
Bonagee responded with Black's shot being cleared off the line by Jason Breslin before Cockhill doubled their lead on the strike of half time. Great work from Corey McBride forced an error in the Bonagee defence. With Rudden looking to latch onto the loose ball he was fouled and dusted himself off before coolly firing home to make it 2-0.
The second half saw Bonagee push for a response and Cockhill look to play on the counter attack. Bonagee were denied by a fine Harry Doherty save on 49mins before Michael Funston's shot was charged down.
Bonagee halved the deficit on 74mins when Gareth Harkin broke a tackle in midfield before advancing into the box and firing past Doherty.
Cockhill went close on a couple of occasions to making the game safe with McBride and Stephen Duffy going close.
A McNamee free kick was turned around the post by Doherty late on before Deano Larkin found space in the Cockhill penalty area but his attempted lob drifted agonisingly over the bar as the game finished 2-1 to great acclaim from the large home support.
