Last year, I set out on a mission to open a Yoga studio in a town of 2000 people in rural Ireland. A place at the edge of the world that I love deeply, but where Yoga was certainly not popular, let alone mainstream.
Shifting The ReWild from a single-teacher lens into a studio that now welcomes hundreds of people every month has been a rough awakening to maturity, responsibility, and accountability. How to operate a business in line with my values within a capitalist world that does little to support us? How can a Yoga Studio exist in the same world battling wars, in the same town that houses so many displaced people? What is the role of spirituality in our community?
I learned what it’s like to be a piece in an industry that is still predominantly elitist, ableist, and muddled in modern greed and perfomance that has little to do with original Yogic values. I felt the weight of being responsible for every single payment, and the face of a business in a place where everyone knows you.
I also experienced the joy of creating a dedicated space for holistic practices in a community that had none, and saw in our students’ faces the relief and hope I’ve felt after nearly every Yoga class since I was 16. I felt privileged to provide regular work for a small number of people.
I witnessed the coldness of some who wave a flag of success without ever sharing a vulnerable moment. But also connected with those who wear their heart on their sleeve, and do business with grace and camaraderie.
The ReWild Studio has been a greater challenge than I anticipated, and it has also opened more doors than I could have imagined. I learned that thriving and surviving are only around the corner from each other.
This business has given me the chance to live the Yogic values that have inspired me (especially on my sh*ttiest days) for 13 years.
At its core, Yoga is based on the belief that we coexist in an ecosystem where all stems from Divinity, we call this universal play ‘reality’. Through it, we have the chance to fulfil our role and uphold values that benefit all.
Thank you so much to our team & students for being part of this great cosmic ride.
With gratitude,
Dani
