Recognising the Signs of Domestic Abuse and Control

Domestic abuse isn’t always physical. It can be subtle, invisible, and deeply damaging. Abuse is about power and control — and it can happen to anyone.

Here are some signs to look out for:
• 🚫 Isolation – Cutting you off from friends, family, or support.
• 💬 Gaslighting – Making you doubt your own memory or reality.
• 💰 Financial Control – Limiting your access to money or monitoring every penny.
• 📱 Monitoring – Checking your phone, emails, or whereabouts without consent.
• 🗣 Criticism & Belittling – Constantly undermining your confidence or worth.
• 🚨 Intimidation – Using threats, looks, or gestures to cause fear.

If you recognise these behaviours — in your relationship or someone else’s — know that it’s not your fault and help is available.

📞 If you’re in the UK:
• National Domestic Abuse Helpline (24/7, free): 0808 2000 247
• In an emergency, always call 999

💙 You deserve to feel safe, respected, and valued.

Go Purple Day is a national initiative, driven by An Garda Síochána and domestic abuse services across Ireland, to shine a light on the realities of domestic violence and highlight the crucial supports available.
