I have completed and qualified in Oncology massage specifically designed to help people who are undergoing cancer treatment. Cancer Research UK has stated that One of the main reasons people with cancer use massage is because it helps them feel good. It is a way they feel they can help themselves.

Massage therapy can help lift your mood, improve your sleep and enhance your well being. There is some evidence to help support these benefits.

Massage for people with cancer might help you relax and cope with:

stress
anxiety
headaches
pain

Side effects
Most people don’t have any side effects from having a massage. But you might feel a bit light headed, sleepy, tired or thirsty afterwards. Some people can feel a bit emotional or tearful for a while.

Research into massage and cancer
There is no scientific evidence that massage can treat cancer. But it is commonly used to help people feel more relaxed. It might help people cope with their cancer and symptoms.

People with cancer should avoid very deep massage. Gentler types may be safer.

Some people worry that having a massage when you have cancer may make the cancer cells travel to other parts of the body. But no research has proved this to be true.
Talk to your cancer doctor or specialist nurse before using massage therapy.

Avoid massaging any area of your body where you are having radiotherapy to. And don’t have massage to areas where your skin is broken, bleeding or bruised.

Avoid general massage therapy to your arms or legs if they are swollen because of lymphoedema. Lymphoedema is a build up of fluid due to the lymphatic system not draining properly.

There is a special type of massage used for lymphoedema. Its called manual lymphatic drainage (MLD). This is a very specialised treatment and people who need MLD are referred to a lymphoedema specialist by their doctor or specialist nurse or seek a qualified lymphoedema therapist by looking on MLD website. the link is below where all therapist can be found.

LYMPHATIC MASSAGE IS NOT JUST FOR LYMPHOEDEMA
I am incredibly love lymphatic drainage, it is not just for chronic swelling but for much more besides that.

The sessions are gentle, painless, non-clinical, relaxing, and over the years that I have been applying this work in my practice, I’ve learned that it’s not just for treating lymphedema, by far.

Post-surgical swelling is a big one, and that can be from a major surgery like a hip replacement down to a simpler procedure with much smaller incisions, such as liposuction.
MLD can help to reduce fluid volume and puffiness by redirecting unwanted fluid to the lymph vessels to alleviate the swelling, inflammation and pain.
As well as all that MLD also has a calming, analgesic effect, so it can help with post-surgical pain. Which, think about it…maybe less pain meds? Less anxiety an stress?

Another wonderful benefit of MLD, especially during cold and allergy seasons, is that it can help drain the sinuses. by moving the fluid from the sinus areas to the then downward toward the collarbone (the region where the lymphatic system “ends” and joins up with the cardiovascular system where it deposits its fluid), that j***y sinus congestion can give way to some relief and easier breathing.

• Headaches/Migraines
• Post-trauma, such as whiplash or sprains
• Pregnancy related oedema in ankles and legs
• Rheumatoid Arthritis
• Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and fibromyalgia pain relief
• Managing stresses and anxiety symptoms
• Pain Control/General Relaxation

Below is a short video on how to best protect yourself during this great weather that we are blessed to have in this lymphoedema summer.

Wear sunscreen, drink water / fluids. stay away from coffee, fizzy drinks, alcohol, have cooler bottles or face cloths in a cooler bag handy to help cool you, have good skin care and if possible stay in the shade.
