Showering in the dark is like a “reset button” for a busy or anxious brain! 🚿 💛

- Gives your brain a break: Bright lights keep your brain on “high alert”. Turning them off turns down your brain’s “threat radar,” letting your body switch from stressed mode to rest mode.

- Helps you stay present: Without lights or mirrors to distract you, you naturally focus on simple things l like the warmth of the water, the sound, and the smell of your soap. This helps stop racing thoughts.

- Lowers stress hormones: The mix of warm water and darkness helps lower cortisol (the stress hormone) and signals your body to start making melatonin, which helps you feel sleepy and calm.

- Creates a “safe cocoon”: The dark, quiet space feels private and cozy, like a small sanctuary where you can let go of the day’s worries.

Thanks to our wonderful psychotherapist Vivienne for this piece!

Many parents tell us the same thing: I wish we had set phone rules earlier! The phone is causing so many arguments!

Without clear boundaries, smartphones negatively impact teenagers’ sleep, focus, emotional wellbeing, and general overall development. That’s why we created a Parent-Teen Smartphone Contract! To help families set expectations from the get go!

The contract helps parents and teens agree on things like:
✔ Screen time limits
✔ Social media boundaries
✔ Phone-free times (especially at night)
✔ Respectful and responsible phone use

Our Senior Psychotherapist & clinic owner, Katrina Dennehy, regularly delivers talks to parents, schools, and community groups on how to navigate smartphone use with teenagers and protect young people’s mental health and development.

✨ If you’re planning to give your teen a phone, this contract can be a really helpful starting point.

💙 Walk & Talk done and dusted 💙
What an incredible turnout today for our Walk & Talk hosted by Smaointe CBT and Solas Health & Fitness. It was amazing to see so many people come out, moving together, chatting, laughing, and genuinely connecting.
There was such a strong sense of community throughout the walk. People supporting people, conversations flowing, smiles everywhere. Exactly what days like Blue Monday (allegedly 😉) call for; more like Blue Sky Monday!!
Events like this are a powerful reminder of how movement, connection, and shared space can make a huge difference to our mental health. Thank you to everyone who showed up and made today so special 💙
Here’s to more walks, more talks, and more community ✨🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️

Blue Monday: Walk & Talk for Mental Health 🚶‍♀️🚶‍♂️
Blue Monday is often called the “most depressing day of the year”. The idea originated from a marketing campaign in the mid-2000s, by the Travel Industry, based on a (non-scientific) formula combining factors like weather, debt, motivation, and post-holiday blues. While the formula itself isn’t evidence-based, the feelings many people experience at this time of year are very real.
That’s why we’re inviting you to get moving, connect, and talk.
🗓 Monday 19th January
⏰ 13:00
📍 Meeting at the first carpark on the Crosshaven Walk
💡 Why walking together helps:
• Regular physical activity is associated with 20–30% lower risk of depression and anxiety
• Even 30 minutes of walking can boost mood through endorphins and stress reduction
• Strong social connection is linked to better mental health, lower loneliness, and increased resilience
This walk is about community, conversation, and gentle movement, no pressure, no pace to keep, just showing up. All are welcome 💙
Scan the QR code for more details or contact us directly.
Let’s turn Blue Monday into something brighter, together.

Sunday evening dread is real!!

Here are some practical tips to help ease you back into work if you have had some time off over Christmas.

1) Carve 10 minutes out for you today (I did a face mask, hence no makeup in this video!).
2) Organise yourself as best you can- Pick 2/3 things to help you feel in control of your day/week.
3) Aim to start your day at 60/70%- leave off the 100% goal of hitting the ground running. 4) Allow yourself permission to take time to refocus and train back in your attention span.
5) Bring some of the 'Holiday spirit' with you into your week for comfort.
6) End your work day intentionally- What worked today for me? What can I leave off until tomorrow?
Finally, organise something to look forward to. Hope these help!!

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!!

Men’s mental health at Christmas

Christmas carries expectations of warmth, generosity, and connection. But it also brings pressure: to maintain harmony, to keep things cheerful, to avoid disrupting the collective rhythm of celebration. For men who have long believed that emotional honesty risks burdening others, these expectations can reinforce their instinct to pull away, and step into the background.
