This week is Mental Health Awareness Week - and there’s no better time to say this: talking to your GP about how you’re feeling is always okay.

For many people, the hardest part isn’t the struggle itself, it’s admitting it out loud. Whether it’s stress, anxiety, low mood, or something you can’t quite put your finger on, you don’t need to have all the answers before you pick up the phone.

Your GP is not just there for physical health. A conversation about how you’re feeling mentally is just as valid as any other appointment — and just as important.

You don’t need to be in crisis to reach out. You don’t need to have it figured out. You just need to start the conversation.

Our team is here, and we’re listening.

High cholesterol is often silent. Patients usually feel well, with no symptoms or warning signs.

It is commonly picked up on routine blood tests, yet it plays a significant role in long term cardiovascular risk.

The good news is that it is very manageable. Lifestyle changes can make a real difference and, where appropriate, medication is safe and effective.

If you have not had your cholesterol checked recently, it is worth booking in. It only takes a few minutes.

Type 2 diabetes is very common, and many people do not realise they have it.

Symptoms often develop gradually, or can be so mild that they go unnoticed. Some people may notice increased thirst, tiredness, or more frequent urination, but many feel completely well. It is often picked up on routine blood tests rather than because someone feels unwell.

Identifying it early allows you to manage it properly and reduce the risk of complications over time. Lifestyle changes can make a real difference, and where needed, medication is safe and effective.

If you have not had your bloods checked recently, it is worth booking in. It only takes a few minutes.

Do you know your blood pressure numbers?

High blood pressure is often called the “silent killer” - it rarely causes symptoms, yet it significantly raises the risk of heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and dementia if left untreated.

Around 30 to 40% of people in Ireland have high blood pressure, but many don’t know it. Approximately 445,000 people aged 50 and over with high blood pressure in Ireland are not being appropriately managed - either undiagnosed, untreated, or not reaching recommended targets. The good news? It is easy to check and can often be managed very effectively once identified.

If you are aged 40 or over, the HSE recommends having your blood pressure checked once a year. If you are aged 18 to 39 with no risk factors, every five years is advised.

If you haven’t had yours checked recently, speak to our GP or practice nurse team. It takes just a few minutes and could make a real difference.

🫀 Five small steps that support a healthy blood pressure.

High blood pressure can often be improved through everyday lifestyle habits - and small consistent changes really do add up.

Here are five evidence-based steps worth considering:
Move more - regular moderate activity, like a daily walk, supports healthy blood pressure
Reduce salt - even small reductions in dietary salt can make a measurable difference
Limit alcohol - staying within recommended guidelines is beneficial for heart health
Manage stress - chronic stress contributes to raised blood pressure over time
Get checked - you can’t manage what you don’t know about

If you are over 40 and haven’t had your blood pressure checked recently, it’s worth booking in. It takes just a few minutes and is one of the most useful checks you can have.

Our GP and practice nurse team are here to help.

Over 200,000 people in Ireland are living with endometriosis. Despite this, it remains widely misunderstood and, for many, takes years to diagnose.

Endometriosis is a condition where tissue similar to the lining of the womb grows in other parts of the body, most commonly in the pelvic region. It can cause symptoms including severe period pain, pelvic pain, pain during s*x, fatigue, and in some cases, difficulties with fertility.

Diagnosis can be delayed due to the varying and ambiguous nature of symptoms - in some cases it has taken up to nine years for women to receive a diagnosis.

If you experience pain that feels more than just “normal” period pain, or symptoms that are affecting your quality of life, please don’t dismiss it. Your GP is a good first port of call - and there are now more pathways available in Ireland to support diagnosis and treatment.

You deserve to be heard.

Prostate health - what every man should know.

Prostate cancer is the second most common cancer in men in Ireland, after skin cancer. Every year, more than 4,000 men are diagnosed, meaning around 1 in 6 men will receive a diagnosis during their lifetime.

Many men with early prostate cancer have no symptoms at all. That’s why awareness and early conversation with your GP matters.
Symptoms to be aware of include changes to urinary flow, needing to urinate more frequently - especially at night - or any blood in urine or semen. These can also be caused by non-cancerous conditions, but they should always be checked.

If you are a man over the age of 45, it is worth talking to your GP about PSA testing, particularly if you have risk factors such as a family history of prostate cancer.

If you have concerns, our team is here to help. Don’t put it off.

We hope you all had a wonderful Easter weekend with your loved ones. 🐣

The Easter holidays are a great opportunity to spend quality time with your little ones - and keeping kids active and engaged during school breaks is great for their physical and mental health.

But it’s not just children who benefit. Getting outside, whether with family, friends, or simply on your own, is one of the simplest things you can do for your physical and mental wellbeing.

A walk in the fresh air, time in nature, or just stepping away from screens for a while can make a real difference to how you feel day to day.

Whatever it looks like for you - make the most of the longer, brighter days this spring. 🌿
