Hip & knee replacement myths!!

Every week in our clinic we hear the question “am I too young for a hip/knee replacement.” The simple answer to this question is – No! The joint replacements available today can last over 50 years.

Total hip replacement and total knee replacement are two of the most successful operations for improving quality of life, mobility and pain relief.
There are many factors to consider when deciding to have a joint replacement surgery.
This includes the severity of the joint disease and symptoms, age of the patient, co-morbidities (such as cardiac problems, diabetes, obesity, pain syndromes or mental health) and whether non-operative management has been explored.

Please call 094 90 20202 or email hpegler@tmmc.ie for more information.

Mr Derek Bennett
Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon
The Mayo Medical Centre & The Galway Clinic
Have you heard of the Rapid Hip / Knee Recovery Programme? The Rapid Recovery Program is a system for minimizing pain and minimizing the physiological input of the operation to the patient.
It involves using painkillers to control pain before the operation and minimizing any physiological disturbance to the patient after surgery so they can mobilize as early as possible after their joint replacement. Generally speaking patients are encouraged to get out of bed and walk approximately two hours after their joint replacement therefore enabling the average hospital stay to be significantly reduced.
For more information please contact Helen on 094 90 20202 or email hpegler@tmmc.ie

During 2023, people on the island of Ireland are being asked to take practical steps - no matter how small - to improve their own health and the health of the men and boys around them.

Cancer awareness and heart health are two areas where this can be realistically achieved.

Prevention is always better than cure. Make sure that you stay and follow at least some of the ten top tips for men’s health in the new ‘Action Man’ booklet: www.mhfi.org/ActionMan2023.pdf
