💥CRUMBLING SPINE💥
This is without a doubt my most hated and loathed term used to describe spinal osteoporosis or general age related spinal changes
Unfortunately I still see many patients who have been given this horrendous and harmful explanation for why they have back pain, who are now s**t scarred to move for fear of crumbling away further!
I find a nice way to reassure and reduce this fear patients have after being told this awful news, as well as help them understand how exercise can help, is to explain how spines are surrounded and supported by many robust and strong muscles.
By exercising and strengthening these muscles it can help support their spine and protect it from further damage.
Its still a challenge to get patients to trust their spine once someone has told them its as fragile as a digestive biscuit, but with some reassurance, encouragement and exercise it can be done.
Also research has shown that resistance exercise is very bloody effective at reducing pain, improving function, and general quality of life after osteoporotic spinal fractures.
As always... you can’t go wrong getting strong!
I shall be doing more ‘my doctor says I have...’ soon so stay tuned for more! .

IMPORTANT MESSAGE! 🤔 THINK! Why does this invidiual want to Run/Swim/Walk or whatever it may be! Perhaps the obvious reason is exercise but dig deeper! Maybe it's for their mental health, social, maybe it gives them a break from other parts of their so before you tell them to STOP. Think 🤔by 👏🏻👏🏻

A big part of what we do here is try help people understand and make sense of the pain. Pain is complex and individual and can be influenced by a multitude of factors. The more we understand the more possibilities there are for us to return to the things we love doing.

TWO-THIRDS OF HERNIATED DISCS HEAL ON THEIR OWN! - RESULTS FROM A RECENT META-ANALYSIS

Too many people think that once you have a disc herniation (or disc bulge), that you’ve got it for life 😥

Well, a recent meta-analysis (Zhong et al., 2017) has shown that 2/3 of disc bulges spontaneously heal on their own! Many of them within a few months too. 😱

Conclusion from the paper: “Because the overall incidence of disc de-herniation is now 66.66% according to our results, conservative treatment may become the first choice of treatment for LDH.” Even though discs sometimes herniate, this does NOT mean they 'slip'. Jarod Hall has written a great blog on what actually does happen and how to deal with it.
