If you have a little one who is nervous about going back to school after the holidays. Here are a few ideas that might help!

Remember the most important thing for children at times of transition is our calm reassuring presence. We can validate their feelings by acknowledging any big emotions without judgement or expectation about what they ‘should’ be feeling. Just listening to their feelings helps, as the fear of separation that they feel is very real to them. Your connection with your child is the most important support you can give!

But we can also put in place some rituals which can help at times of separation. Here are three small but very effective ways to support those who might struggle a little with separation anxiety.

Matching Love Hearts:

Draw a little heart on your wrist, and a matching one on theirs. If they are missing you during the day, or just feel the need to connect with you, they put their fingers on the little heart. They will feel their pulse, like a reassuring heartbeat, when they touch their wrist. Let them know that you will press your love heart if you are missing them. You can also add a spray of your perfume or aftershave to their wrist, as another little connection to you.

Pebble in my Pocket:

Find two very similar pebbles, gem-stones or crystals. You keep one in your pocket and the child keeps the other in their pocket. Tell them that any time they feel a little nervous or are missing you they give their pebble a little squeeze. It is a very concrete reminder of their connection to you. [Some alternatives to a pebble that they might like to keep in their pocket are a little photo of mum/dad/family, or a hankie with your perfume/aftershave on it]

Worries in My Pocket:

Talk to your child about any worries they have about starting school. Write the worries down on pieces of paper. Then you put the pieces of paper in your pocket. Tell your child you are going to carry their worries for the day while they are in school, so they don’t have to carry them alone. This can really help to ease any fears they may have.

I would love to hear if you have any other tips that have worked for you in the past.

So it's back to school soon, and as every parent knows, sometimes the wee ones and not so wee ones 😀need a little boost to settle them in, and help avoid the dreaded doses, that tend to do the rounds when school starts. Many of my clients have been asking for advice in regard to supplements. With so many supplements being promoted online, it's very hard for them to feel confident in their choice. And also feel there is alot of conflicting adice and it makes them feel they need loads of different stuff. My advice would be as follows.

😀If you feel you would like to supplement, a good age apropriate multivitamin with varied omagas is more than sufficient .There really should not be any need for anything else unless your doctor or other MEDICAL health professional has advised differently.

😀 If you feel your child has a varied and healthy diet and you are not concerned about vitamin intake. So you just want a wee boost to help with settling in. An age appropriate omega oil is perfect. Especially if it has a touch of Vit D,C or E

😀 My recommendations for National School age would be Eskimo Kids OR Junior Revive. They are both great so whichever is most suitable for your child.

😀For secondary level (especially those facing the start of their junior and leaving cert year) and starting college Revive Mastermind is fantastic, but if they don't like the the drink form, Seven seas cod liver oil plus multivitamin for 12yrs+ is OR Sevenseas omega 3 +multivitamin for Men/woman 18yrs + are great wee all-rounders. Again if you dont think there is need for a vitamin boost and just want omega oils to help with focus with the busy settling in period, any Good Quality oil capsules such as Clean Marine seven seas or pharma nord omegas.

💢💢💢MOST IMPORTANTLY 💢💢💢

The most important advice I can give you when it comes to supplements is that not all supplements are safe for everyone. So it does not matter if it's for your child, yourself, or another family member. I always recommend that If there is any known underlying condition or you are on ANY medications whatsoever, please buy your supplements at Pharmacy so you can ask them to check for contraindications and drug interactions specific to the medication or condition.

All my recommendations are available at Fosters Pharmacy ltd , Arva. Where there is an excellent selection of good quality supplements available and well trained staff to advise you on an alternative if my recommendations are not suitable for you or your family member.

I hope this has been helpful and has answered some of your questions😀
Wishing both students and parents a smooth start to the new school year and all the months that follow 😀
