Titled “Gut Instincts: Understanding the Hindgut’s Role in Equine Health and Disease”, the event is kindly sponsored by Succeed Equine Succeed Equine UK & Ireland

The webinar will feature Dr Lydia Gray, an equine veterinarian, researcher, and educator specialising in evidence-based nutrition and supplement science, with a focus on digestion, metabolic balance, and performance. She is known for translating complex nutrition research into practical guidance for horse owners and professionals.

She will be joined by Dr Nikki Walshe, Associate Professor in Equine Science at the University of Limerick, whose research focuses on equine gut health, the microbiome, parasitology, and metabolic syndrome. Her work examines how diet, exercise, and parasite control influence equine health and welfare.

The Irish Equine Veterinary Association has issued an official statement regarding recent advice from some suppliers encouraging horse owners to “stock up” on wormers ahead of the December 2025 regulation change.

IEVA does not support this practice.

Unsupervised or unnecessary use of antiparasitic products contributes to resistance, jeopardises equine welfare, and threatens the long-term effectiveness of these essential medicines.

From December 2025, antiparasitic treatments will require veterinary oversight. Wormers should only be used when there is a clinical indication, supported by diagnostic evidence such as faecal egg counts.

Responsible, evidence-based parasite control protects horses today and preserves vital treatments for the future.

🕯 Monday Minute – Remembering Dr. Mu’ath Talat

Today, we pause to honour the life of Dr. Mu’ath Talat, a veterinarian in Gaza whose compassion for animals continued even in the most dangerous and devastating of circumstances.

Dr. Mu’ath treated injured horses, donkeys, cats and dogs — not because it was easy, but because it was right. When others saw danger, he saw a life worth saving.

His dedication reminds us of the true heart of veterinary medicine:

To relieve suffering

To serve without expectation

To show kindness even when the world is unkind

💔 His loss is felt deeply across the global veterinary community.

May his legacy inspire us to use our skills with empathy, to support one another, and to never forget why we chose this profession.
