Happy Kids Play Therapy Siobhán Fitzgerald

Happy Kids Play Therapy Siobhán Fitzgerald Accredited Play Therapist with Play Therapy Ireland.Providing 1:1+ group therapy for children and adolescents.

Please make contact to discuss if play therapy may benefit your child. I provide one to one Therapeutic Play Sessions for children who are experiencing emotional or behavioural difficulties. These difficulties may be present for a number of reasons, such as, bullying, naturally being a shy or anxious child, a medical diagnosis of a condition, physical, intellectual or behavioural difficulties, tra

uma, separation from parents, experiencing or witnessing Domestic Violence, experience of substance addiction, complex family dynamics. These are a few examples, however regardless of the reason for the difficulties present, Play Therapy provides a safe, non-judgemental space where the child leads, in the session the child uses Play which is a child's natural medium to communicate and understand their world. In the sessions the child communicates using the toys through symbolic play and in turn works through their emotions which helps the child deal with the circumstances and this helps them manage the presenting behavioural or emotional difficulties. I also provide group sessions for children with common presenting difficulties upon request of an organisation or school.

Parenting has become an incredibly complex business. Whilst some children and teenagers are a dream to rear and give no bother at all, others are always pushing the boundaries as parents become concerned about their attitude, outbursts and immature behaviour. However, an increasingly common presentation is anxiety. We have reached almost epidemic proportions of children and teenagers crippled with anxiety. These young people are struggling to attend school and navigate peer friendships. They exhibit all manner of anxiety symptoms including panic attacks, OCD, rigid eating and exercise patterns, overthinking and dreading the future. They sometimes place unbelievably high expectations on themselves and, as a result, live with tremendous pressure. The stress creates a body response as many also endure such symptoms as GI tract issues, skin disorders, stress headaches etc. It is not unusual for self-harming behaviours and suicidal thoughts to emerge. Intuitive parenting skills and breathing techniques may help momentarily, however, they typically don’t resolve the underlying problem of how to address the negativity, self-doubt and feelings of not being good enough. All of this becomes heightened as the school year starts again - and the whole family is held hostage to the anxiety. Join Bronagh Starrs, internationally renowned psychotherapist and mental wellbeing consultant for this evening talk for parents. Participants will gain an indepth understanding of the dynamics of anxious presentation in childhood and adolescence, illuminating the mindset of the anxious young person. A trove of effective parenting strategies will be presented.
