Lymphoedema Awareness Week (March 2–8) highlights the importance of recognising and managing lymphoedema early. Lymphoedema is a chronic condition caused by a build-up of lymphatic fluid, often occurring after cancer treatment such as surgery or radiotherapy. Early intervention is essential to prevent progression, reduce swelling, and maintain quality of life.
Treatment focuses on effective self-management and specialist care. Skin care is vital to keep the skin healthy and reduce the risk of infection. Exercise and movement help stimulate lymphatic flow and maintain mobility. Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD), a specialised gentle skin stretch technique provided by trained therapists, can support lymph flow and reduce swelling. Compression therapy, including compression garments or bandaging, helps prevent fluid from re-accumulating and supports limb shape and function.
With early diagnosis, appropriate treatment, and ongoing support from healthcare professionals, many people living with lymphoedema can successfully manage their symptoms and continue to live active, fulfilling lives. # #
