This is well worth a listen for those of you who fear you might injure your back by doing weights. The evidence presented here strongly suggests otherwise and the truth is you are much more likely to injure your back by being sedentary and inactive.

Parents of sporty kids, have a read of this.

Lots of discussion recently around whether youth athletes should specialise early into a sport.

Early Specialisation has been proposed as a mechanism for attaining elite sport performance because of the increased time spent in intensive training for that sport.

However, when we compare elite and non elite athletes and studies of professional or collegiate athletes across a variety of sports we see that elite athletes typically specialise later in adolescence and participate in more sports during high school than non elite athletes.

Clinically it’s also important to consider whether specialisation will affect injury rates.

A review by Bell et al in 2018 revealed consistent evidence that a high level of sport specialisation is associated with a greater risk of developing an overuse injury, however we must note that the quality of included studies is limited.

They found that athletes with high specialisation were 81% more likely to sustain an overuse injury compared with athletes with low specialisation and 18% more likely than those with moderate specialisation.

Even moderate specialisation appears to be associated with a greater risk of injury than low specialization (39% more likely).

These results show a stepwise increase in risk with increasing levels of specialisation.

The results support the large number of clinical reports and position statements that warn against this practice despite the limited evidence in this area.

The findings support the recommendation that athletes should delay specialisation until late adolescence.

Researchers believe that diversified training during early adolescence results in a more well-rounded athlete.

It’s a really important message as many sports set ups, coaches and parents still believe early specialisation is a must for success.

4 key ways to strengthen the hamstrings!

🏋️Using these approaches helps to address knee flexion and hip extension weakness plus prepare the hamstring for the demands of top speed running!

🏃🏽‍♀️Sprint training has been found to increase both eccentric hamstring strength and maximum running speed (Freeman et al. 2019). We know how beneficial Nordic Curls are for the hamstrings, but Mendiguchia et al. (2020) found sprint training to be superior for increasing Biceps Femoris fascicle length (an important factor in hamstring injury).

⚠️ One word of caution though - running speed should be increased gradually for injured runners, especially following hamstring injury. Sprinting should be added at the appropriate time in healing and rehab. Often a period of strength training and power work is needed first to prepare the hamstrings for the high peak loads in top speed running.
