Hydration

As the summer heat is upon us remember to stay hydrated throughout the day!

Avoid reaching for coffee, fizzy drinks and alcohol over water as these can dehydrate you more sometimes as they are high in sugars. If you are out drinking or socialising then remember to also add in glasses of water as often as you can.

Keeping cool with light clothing, a hat and sticking to the shade as this can help you stop sweating as much which will therefore keep you at a less of a chance of getting dehydrated.

Keep sipping cool water throughout the day and watch for dry lips or skin as a sign you may be lacking in water. The body usually only registers thirst if you are already mildly dehydrated and have a body water loss of 1-2% so keep a bottle with you at all times.

Check yourself for mild headaches, feeling weak, feeling lightheaded and for yellow to dark urine colour regularly throughout the day to make sure you are sufficiently hydrated.

Adding dilute, slices of fruit, berries or more to your water can encourage you to keep drinking and keeping a glass or bottle by your side at all times can also help the habit form.

Bloating...

A very common issue for many, especially females.

Bloating comes from when the gastrointestinal (GI) tract is filled with air or gas, making the abdomen feel tight, swollen and filled with pressure. People experiencing it can feel only lightly uncomfortable or actually be in moderate pain that can affect their everyday activities.

Gas is a common cause of bloating and it can build up in the digestive tract when undigested food gets broken down or when you swallow air.

Eating and drinking too fast so you are swallowing excessive air is a common cause of bloating. Smoking, chewing gum, having IBD (irritable bowel disorders) issues, food intolerances, weight gain, mental health issues and eating disorders can all be causes of bloating also.

Changing lifestyle habits like giving up chewing gum or smoking or making an conscious decision to slow down when eating can all help issues of bloating.

However, often more serious issues can be the root of the problem so make sure to contact a healthcare professional if problems are persistent and affecting your day to day activities.

Caffeine is something we all consume in our day to day lives. Each of us probably consume more than we realise too. Caffeine is in coffee, tea, soft drinks, energy drinks and even chocolate and all in varying amounts.

Caffeine is a stimulant and can boost energy, your heart rate and improve focus and energy to differing effects. It is commonly used as a stimulant to start our day, before big meetings or exams or before exercise and the gym.

Caffeine affects each of us differently and can stay in our system anything from 4-9 hours. If you have your last coffee late in the day than expect that coffee to still be affecting you later that night when you go to bed.

Tips for limiting the affect of caffeine:
1) Try have your last high caffeine item no later than 3pm in the day.
2) Read packaging to see how much caffeine is in other items you are consuming such as soft drinks and energy drinks.
3) Swap caffeinated teas for herbal teas, especially later in the evening.
4) Try to drink a glass of water for every caffeinated drink you have throughout the day.
5) Know what affects you and your own body.

**New Product Highlight**

Dr. Doireann O'Leary has brought out a new range of essential supplements for many common deficiencies in the general population today.

Her Vitamin D supplement range includes a spray form as shown below, as well as a capsule form. Both are equally effective and which one you choose is up to personal preference.

Vitamin D is very important for the general population in Ireland as due to the low levels of sunlight in the winter months, we can often be deficient in Vitamin D. This is why between October and March of each year, a daily Vitamin D supplement as shown below is recommended.

Additionally, for those who get little sunlight during the day time and work indoors all year round, a supplement daily for the whole year may be beneficial.

Vitamin D is essential for the proper functioning of your immune system as well as helping the body absorb calcium and this supplement along with other brands can be very useful by being taken daily and used along side a varied and balanced diet.
