I.... am a massive nerd. And I'm not afraid to admit it! I just love learning. And I like to get things right and know the facts. I take notes. I draw diagrams. I organise my notes categorically. And I link them back to reputable sources so myself and my clients can refer back to the research at any time
In order to learn, you must first be aware and admit that you don't know. The not knowing is your opportunity to go and find the answer.
Often, in the maternity system, the way a person's birth is handled is based on the care provider's professional opinion or preference. But opinion is not fact, and often practices are not evidence based. Things happen that were unnecessary or could've been avoided, and when birthing people don't know the evidence based info, it's harder for them to make informed decisions
As a doula, my clients are putting their trust in me to give them all the relevant information necessary to make their own decisions. So the worst thing that I could do is accidentally give them false information for fear of admitting that I don't know the answer.
It's okay to not know the answers! The answers are out there. You just need to go find them, and that's how you learn and expand your expertise.
A good teacher never forgets that they are a student first and foremost. A good teacher is always learning and expanding their knowledge base.
I learn from my students and clients, and they learn from me
