Jennifer O'Mullane Counsellor & Psychotherapist. Based in Midleton Co Cork Sometimes life is hard and we need support to work through our struggles.
It's not always easy to open up to family and friends. I believe talking to a professional Counsellor or Psychotherapist can help. Counselling can help address problems and issues that are causing you emotional distress or making you feel overwhelmed. I consider myself to be an approachable, sincere and compassionate therapist. I have successfully helped clients struggling with:
I hold a BA Hons in Counselling & Psychotherapy and I am a member of the Irish Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy. My therapy room is a safe space where you can come in confidence and share openly about what’s on your mind without judgement. I can help you understand your feelings, thoughts and actions more clearly. My aim is to help you become more self-aware, resourced and finally empowered so you can find solutions to the struggles you are experiencing in your life. It can be scary at first to pick up the phone and make the call to ask for help. It’s a very brave decision to make and it is a step in the right direction to living a more fulfilling life. Finding the right therapist to work with is very important. I offer a free 30 minute session to new clients. This gives them an introduction to therapy and an opportunity to decide if I am the right therapist for them. You should feel comfortable with the therapist and over time establish a warm and trusting therapeutic relationship. My style of counselling is based on the Humanistic approach. Humanistic therapies focus on self-development, growth and responsibilities. Humanistic approaches include Person-centred therapy, Gestalt therapy, Transactional Analysis, Internal Family Systems, Attachment, Complex Trauma and Personality & Developmental Theories. I also use Mindfulness in my work to help clients bring their attention to their internal and external experiences occurring in the present moment. This is a useful practise to learn for self-resourcing outside of the therapy room. I am based In Rive Fitness, Nutrition & Wellness Centre Glanmire. There is a separate discreet entry to my room at the side of the building to protect your privacy. Free parking is available. Therapy sessions are 1 hour, daytime and evening appointments available.

Cold water swimming is now considered one of the most powerful natural mood therapies studied in modern neuroscience. When the body enters cold water, the sudden drop in temperature triggers an intense but beneficial shock response. This shock activates the sympathetic nervous system, causing the brain to release endorphins, dopamine, and noradrenaline at levels significantly higher than normal conditions. These chemicals are directly tied to feelings of happiness, motivation, and emotional balance.
The University College London researchers found that this natural chemical surge often mirrors — and in some cases exceeds — the effects seen in patients taking traditional antidepressant medication. Unlike pills, cold immersion trains the nervous system rather than simply stabilizing it. Over time, the brain becomes more resilient, learning how to calm itself faster after stress, panic, or emotional overload.
Another major discovery is the impact on inflammation. Many forms of depression are linked to neuroinflammation, where the brain remains in a constant state of stress signaling. Cold exposure rapidly lowers this inflammation. This is why participants reported improved clarity of thought, better memory, and stronger overall emotional grounding.
Physical benefits compound the psychological ones. Cold water immersion increases blood circulation, strengthens the cardiovascular system, and stimulates the vagus nerve — the control center of emotional regulation, heart rhythm, digestion, and stress response. By repeatedly activating and relaxing this nerve, swimmers develop greater stability in mood and emotional reactions in daily life.
In mental health programs across Europe, cold therapy is now being tested as an officially recognized, drug-free path to treating anxiety, depression, burnout, sleep disorders, and chronic stress. What makes it revolutionary is its accessibility: it does not require expensive equipment, medication, or technology. Only nature — water, breath, and willingness.
The result reported by most participants is not just temporary mood elevation, but a long-lasting shift: deeper calm, improved sleep, reduced emotional volatility, and a renewed sense of inner strength. Cold water does not numb the mind; it awakens it.
Nature is proving something medicine has always hoped for — healing can be simple, pure, and profoundly effective.

Life is not meant to be easy! I find myself saying this to my clients, to myself, to my children… life is hard and sometimes we need support. Having supportive family and friends to talk to is great however not everyone has this. Clients often report speaking to someone outside of the family circle is so helpful for many reasons – you don’t know me, you won’t judge me, you don’t try to fix it, I feel I can be me, you just listen…
Counselling can help address problems and issues that are causing you emotional distress or making you feel overwhelmed. I consider myself to be fairly normal, approachable, compassionate and sincere. I have successfully helped clients struggling with the following issues and more:
• Anxiety
• Panic Attacks
• Depression
• Stress
• Complex Trauma
• Relationship Difficulties
• Bereavement
• Loss
• Low Self Esteem
• Suicidal Thoughts & Feelings
• Self-Harming
• Abuse

I engage in 20 hours of continuous personal development per year and I attend supervision regularly.
