Frank Kelleher Paediatric Osteopath

Frank Kelleher Paediatric Osteopath Frank Kelleher is a Paediatric Osteopath with over 25 years experience in the Health Sector, 17 of those as an Osteopath and 8 as a nurse for PLD.

Opening the Children’s Clinic Cork has been a dream for quite a while. We have moved location quite a few times over the 20 years working in Osteopathy and with each move we learned something new! Our new clinic is designed with babies, children and their parents in mind and we have made the environment as child and parent friendly as possible. There is a lovely relaxed feeling here that has happened naturally. Our Baby Changing and Feeding Room is a little calm oasis and parents love it! In addition to Paediatric Osteopathy we also offer other services here at the clinic. We have Speech and Language Therapy, a Paediatric Audiologist,a Chartered Psychologist and a Tongue Tie Practitioner. By offering these additional services we hope to make the Children’s Clinic a centre for baby and child based services. We will continue to improve the services here at the clinic all the time. For example, we recently purchased a baby weighing scales so that parents can get an up to date weight for baby while they are here. A small thing, but something that’s very important for parents of Reflux babies who are on medication. Finally, we would like to thank everyone for all the wonderful cards and comments on our new clinic. It’s amazing to know that what we had planned all this time was something that works so incredibly well!

The majority of the babies we see here at the clinic are under 6 months old. So why do parents bring their little ones to see us?

1. Unsettled and crying - this is such a common reason. Many babies can be unsettled for periods during the day but if your little one is unsettled and crying for long periods without finding any relief, it may be worth a check up to rule out a digestive issue.

2. Reflux - While not as common as it was a few years ago, many parents cite reflux as the reason for their appointment. What we do is to find the cause of the reflux symptoms and treat that, or refer to someone else to treat it.

3. Head Shape - Some babies are more predisposed to developing a flat head than others. For example, twins have less space available to them before they are born and can have some body tension when they are born as a result. If a baby is delivered by vacuum or forceps, or if a baby was in a transverse lie towards the end of pregnancy, they may have some body tension too.

4. Feeding Issues - Be it breast feeding or bottle feeding, we often see babies who are having some feeding issues. Again, body tension may be the root to this or perhaps it is an allergy or even reflux. Either way, Frank and Sacha will try to find the cause and then advise on a treatment plan.

5. Newborn Check Up - Of course you do not need to be having an issue with your baby to be seen here. We very often see babies for just a newborn check up. Maybe a friend has been to see us before and recommended our clinic or maybe mum brought her first baby and saw the benefit of treatment then. We are very happy to see these babies too.

Has your baby had a tongue tie released? Did you know that physical work from a paediatric osteopath after the release can improve the outcome for your baby?

Babies who have had a tongue tie will very often have body tension. The also tend to have a side preference. These issues can affect a baby’s feeding and comfort.

Resolving any body tension, reducing tightness in the neck and jaw muscles and treating a side preference will have a very positive impact on your baby’s overall health.

If you have any concerns about your baby’s feeding following a tongue tie release maybe a visit to Cork Children’s Clinic will give you the answers you need. Get in touch to book an appointment or book online, see the booking link in our bio. You’ll be so happy you did.

TONGUE TIE in babies is something we see almost every day. Thankfully most are in newborns and once diagnosed, are treated quite quickly, and the baby improves.

We do however still see some older babies presenting with a tongue tie after a few months and a difficult feeding journey. While it’s never too late to treat a tongue tie, the sooner it is diagnosed and treated the better for baby.

So what are the early signs of a tongue tie to look out for?
1. Feeding issues - difficulty latching or poor latch.
2. Clicking sound when feeding
3. Reflux symptoms
4. Falls asleep while feeding
5. A side preference when feeding
6. A very windy baby
7. Gulping or gagging when feeding

If you suspect your baby may have a tongue tie, or if your baby is having feeding or digestive issues, get in touch or book an appointment online.

As a baby progresses through the birth canal, they are pushed from behind by the powerful contractions of the uterus. Their head leads the way, gently turning into the correct position for delivery.

If baby requires a little help at delivery, a forceps or vacuum is used to help guide baby out of the birth canal. Forceps delivery is much less common now and only very experienced obstetricians use them. Vacuum delivery is more common.

Assisted deliveries can often result in the overstretching of the neck muscles on one side and a resulting torticollis. We would advise parents of all babies born by forceps and vacuum to have a check-up done to resolve any muscular issues following delivery.

Paediatric osteopathy is a wonderfully gentle treatment that helps rebalance a baby’s musculoskeletal system following a difficult or prolonged labour. If you would like to book an appointment with one of our osteopaths, call us on 021 4348918 or book online (see link in bio)

We cannot understate how valuable a newborn baby check-up is. Every week we see mums of a second baby returning for just a newborn check-up because they saw how helpful it was for their first baby.

It might be newborn muscular tension, a digestive check-up or a post delivery check, but every baby will benefit. And parents get an opportunity to ask questions and get reassurance.

If you would like to book your baby in with us, just give us a call on 021 4348918 or book online, see the link in our bio.

So many mums tell us how valuable osteopathic treatment has been to their baby, how it changed their experience of being a new mum. And we see mums return with their second and third babies just for a check-up because they know it is a wonderful start for their little one.

Being a new parent can be challenging, even on the good days. It’s such a steep learning curve. Having a baby who is unsettled and upset will only add to your stress ( and deprive you of sleep!)

But we can help you. If you would like to book your baby in for a checkup with Frank Kelleher or Sacha Bucchieri, just give us a call or book online, see the link in our bio.
And if you want to get ahead of the game and book your baby in for after your due date, we are very happy to oblige. It happens more often than you’d think!

We often see babies with flat head over the age of 3 months. Very often their parents may explain that they were told that flat head will resolve by itself as baby gets older. While that may be true for a milder flat head, we would always advise parents to seek treatment for this issue as early as possible, even if that's after 3 months of age. There is still so much that a paediatric osteopath can do to help these babies.
If you think your baby has a flat head and you would like as assessment, give us a call on 021 4348918 or book online. Sacha Bucchieri is our expert on flat head here at Cork Children's Clinic.

Diagnosing a tongue tie in a baby is not as easy as you'd think. Some tongue ties can of course be seen very easily. This is the case when a baby has an anterior tongue tie. It's very visible and the tongue curls up when baby cries.
The other type is a posterior tongue tie. This is much more difficult to diagnose. We have seen babies with a grade 4 posterior tongue tie that had been missed by numerous other people.
Looking into a baby's mouth is not as assessment. A full oral and feeding assessment must be done by someone who knows what they are looking for, preferably a tongue tie practitioner. When we identify a tongue tie by lifting up the baby's tongue to examine the frenulum, we always refer to a tongue tie practitioner for a full assessment.
Here are a few facts about tongue tie.
🧸A baby who can stick their tongue out does not rule out a tongue tie.
🤱A baby who is bottle fed can also be affected by a tongue tie.
🪆A family history of a tongue tie is important.
👅Releasing the tongue tie is not a magic fix, there's work to be done afterwards to ensure the baby's tongue function
