Congratulations to Dr. Claire Curtin who won the Irish Division Postgraduate Research Award for her research entitled “Oral Health in Residential Care; an Irish Cross-Sectional Study” which was supervised by Professor Martina Hayes. Very well done.

The competition is the highlight of the annual scientific meeting of the Irish Division of the IADR, which was held in Barcelona at the IADR-PER meeting on the 26th of June 20205. This work was completed with contributions from colleagues in the HSE (Dr Dani McGeown) and Mercy University Hospital (Dr Elizabeth Moloney). Claire will now go on to represent the Irish Division next year in the International Hatton Award competition at the general session of the IADR in San Diego, USA.

UCC is currently seeking applications for the role of Dental Nurse within the Cork University Dental School & Hospital (CUDSH). Reporting to the Assistant Director of Nursing, the role of involves a wide range of duties including assisting clinical staff and students in the provision of patient care. The main focus of this role is to support student education and patient treatment.

Cork University Dental School and Hospital wishes to appoint Senior House Officers (SHO) in Paediatric Dentistry, Restorative Dentistry and Oral Surgery/Oral Medicine. The SHO will work as part of the team in the School and Hospital and will be involved in research, patient care and education of undergraduate students. The SHO will be facilitated in undertaking a research project and/or clinical governance project.
As these are training posts, we will in as far as is possible approve the attendance of SHO’s at academic conferences to present their work and/or attend short training courses which are deemed appropriate and relevant for the SHO's educational development. SHOs will also be facilitated to complete the Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching & Learning with UCC. Please note that Garda vetting and/or an international police clearance check may form part of the selection process.

Congratulations to Dr Patricia McDermott on her conferring of her PhD in Dentistry on 28 June 2024. Patricia's thesis was entitled 'Clinical Need and Economic Factors: Influencing Orthodontic Care in a Sample of Patients in Ireland'. Her supervisors were Dr Noel Woods, Prof Richeal Ní Riordain, Prof Martin Kinirons & Prof Donald Burden.
