Baby Lola snoozing at the end of her newborn session today. πŸ’– 7 days old. Thank you to her mum Rebekah and Dad Dan for allowing me to do a full newborn assessment and treatment today and share her story. πŸ’•

Lola had mild torticollis (neck strain) from having a little difficulty on the last turn in the vaginal canal, just before being born. As the strain was on the side of her neck it made feeding on one breast more uncomfortable for Lola and for Mum. I worked gently with her jaw and sucking muscles also to help with this issue. Lola slept through the whole session!

Her over all delivery at 40 weeks plus 4 went really well without need for any intervention. No induction was required in the end as mum had weekly Reflexology sessions to try to help avoid this process.

Mum is feeling healthy & well and baby is feeding and responding well also.

Congratulations guys! πŸ’•πŸ’•

(I will have Vouchers available online soon for newborn assessment and mum and baby treatments in time for Christmas.)

Happy Friday All!! I have a few new followers of late and a few new feathers to my bow so figured I'd reintroduce myself and let you know about the latest osteopathic tricks I've learned. . (And no it's not ALL ABOUT DRY NEEDLING like some of my old favourite patients give out to me for!! πŸ˜‚ You know who you are... πŸ‘€πŸ˜‰)

I'm Lorraine Blackshields and am a registered Osteopath with 20 yrs experience as a therapist in Cork. I work with all things pain but the newest treatments I provide are the following.

PELVIC PAIN
A very common case to treat. If you have back pain, it is likely coming from the pelvis. Mostly seen in women but quite common in men too. It's a not always a weak Pelvic Floor either and I won't be prescribing kegels... πŸ˜‚ A lot of women (and men!) have an overly TIGHT pelvic floor and the school of thought to strengthen it can very much make it worse. In cases like this, it's about asking the right questions in the case history. I have a great relationship with a pelvic floor osteopath and pelvic floor physio. So if external osteopathy on the pelvic ligaments is only providing some relief, I can refer to a women's health osteopath or physio for internal work.

PAEDIATRIC CARE
My favourite ! πŸ’• A newborn check up is always advised in the first weeks of life to assess for stress or strain to the body after birth. Whether that is Natural birth or C-section, baby goes thru a lot of stress being born and it can have mechanical effects. Eg flat head, tight shoulders etc... Causing typical reflux or colic symptoms. I provide treatments for both Mum and Baby after a difficult birth. Each case is different and I treat accordingly. Book baby in early to get out ahead of any symptoms. I treated a 5 day old today on her way home from CUMH. πŸ₯°πŸ˜‡πŸ€— DEVINE... πŸ’•πŸ’•

HEADACHES AND MIGRAINE
Always an interesting treatment. I treat both the neck and cranium (skull) to relieve any tension and I include the jaw also. Most headaches are the end result of stress or anxiety and can affect systems like sinus and hearing. Cranial Osteopathy helps with all of this.

Thank You so much Sinead for your feedback.

I provide treatment for both Mum and Baby Post Natally.

If you both had an unexpectedly eventful birth, either of you may have retained stress or trauma.

Cranial Osteopathy can help to reverse the strains left in the body after a difficult experience.

I'll be taking new patients from Sept 26th.

Cranial is a gentle therapy for any post natal pain, discomfort or negative emotional response to birth trauma.

If you have any questions on how I can help you or baby in your recent post natal journey please call 0212414775. Or use the booking form on my website to secure a booking.

Colic explained and how we can help! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“πŸ‘Ά
During pregnancy and labour there can be mechanical stresses on baby’s diaphragm. Whether that is because of how the head/neck is positioned in the womb or if baby is β€œface-presentation” during delivery. This mechanical compression on the neck can cause impingement on the nerves that begin at the base of the skull at the back of the ear and travel down to the stomach. Retained compression on this area can irritate the function of the digestive system and interferes with normal digestion processes in the stomach… leading to Colic.
Cranial Osteopathy helps to gently release the tension to this area allowing the nerves to function properly. . πŸ™Œ
How Parents can help🀱
(See a registered cranial osteopath first or GP for assessment to see if Colic is the problem)
β€’ Probiotics can help baby with wind issues
β€’ Infacol from the pharmacist added to bottle fed babies or used with a dropper before breast feeding can help with griping pain after feeding.
β€’ If you think your baby might be lactose intolerant talk to your pharmacist about Colief . It helps make milk easier to digest for baby .
β€’ Baby massage to help trapped wind in the tummy and intestines. Please find a registered instructor to learn how to do this at home.
β€’ Play. Gently β€˜cycling’ of the legs and slow movements side to side of baby’s pelvis can also help to promote digestion on downwards wind.

Thank you so much to Nana Siobhan for sharing, updating and reviewing her granddaughter Darla's cranial treatment with me in clinic a few months back.

Darla, her Mum Sylice and Nana Siobhan are a powerhouse of beautiful strong women! πŸ™Œ What a team!
Thank you for trusting me with Darlas Post Natal care. It means a lot when I hear back from patients once they've finished their treatment.

It was such a lovely surprise to see this video in my inbox this morning! πŸ’•πŸ’•

Parents often ask what "magic" we are doing to help baby fall fast asleep during a treatment.
The fact is there is no magic. Cranial Osteopaths have 5 years university training in human anatomy and nervous system function and are highly skilled in finding where tension is being held.

When we find tension in a newborn system it is usually for a reason.

For example an instrumental birth (forceps/vacuum)

A stressful birth (very long or very quick)

An 'eventful birth' (emergency C-section or cord around the neck for example)

Undiagnosed torticollis or tongue tie.

So what are we doing when baby falls asleep during treatment.

We provide gentle techniques to muscles at the cranial base, increasing mobility, opening up motion of the rib cage. This allows for drainage of mucous from the sinuses reducing pressure. Breathing becomes deeper which relaxes the central nervous system and baby relaxes into a deep sleep. All of this brings relaxation and comfort musculo-skeletally, digestive and neurally.

This recovery is vital to a babies early neural development. If we can teach the brain and nervous system what it is to destress and relax, it remembers the feeling and seeks this sensation out in times of stress as the system ages. This is why early cranial osteopathy is so important to newborn health and development.

A wonderful learning tool for the newborn brain. And hopefully helps to bring a happy relaxed household too!

We have a new member of the Lorraine Blackshields Cranial Osteopathy team... 😁😁 And I have a competition for a complimentary newborn cranial treatment.

Yes folks he is a newborn baby *doll* and Nope I haven't lost my marbles... (Just yet... πŸ˜…)
πŸ’•
I sometimes need to show parents new tips for feeding posture, optimal winding posture and various exercises to help release tension in babies neck or lower back.
πŸ’•
We usually have these conversations at the end of the treatment when baby is fast asleep and cosied up in their carry seat, ready to go home.
πŸ’•
Which makes it difficult for me to go about disturbing the relaxing therapeutic sleep baby is in.
πŸ’•
So I've welcomed new born πŸ‘Άto the treatment room to demonstrate any additional advice to mum or Dad to help baby at home.

πŸ‘Ά But he needs a name...!! πŸ‘Ά

I would love some suggestions....!? Has anyone who is following me had or know a new baby born in the last 24hrs... whats the babies name?
The name chosen will receive a free initial newborn checkup with me. Feel free to suggest names in the comments below.

Happy Monday everyone. And congratulations on yout newborns.

Is this scene familiar to you!? Baby is fed, winded, nappy is changed, she's cuddled... But still upset. Is it Reflux, Silent Reflux, Acid Reflux??

What are the differences...?

⏩Reflux is observed spit up. You'll see it. It still irritates the oesophagus. Similar to heartburn in adults. Ouchy!

⏩Silent Reflux is where baby swallows the spit up again which in turn causes irritation to the oesophagus. Recurrinf the drama all over again. You may not see spit up. Babies tongue may also have a whiteness to it.

⏩ Acid reflux has all the same symptoms as the other 2 but baby may have a smell from their breath or refuse a soother. The soother makes the acid come back up the oesophagus everytime baby sucks... Eeekk!! 😬

All will have similar symptoms but have slight differences in diagnosis. ALL will have unexplained crying! Poor baba... And Mom and Dad

All versions of Reflux are symptoms of a cause which I will be able to decipher by taking a full case history of babies birth experience, feeding history and family health history. I will then treat with gentle osteopathy and advice going forward.

If you are concerned that your baby has reflux but you don't know which type or why, please feel free to get in touch. You can book your Baby Cranial Osteopathy appointment online. Link in Bio πŸ’•

See you and your baby soon.

Baby Darla at the end of her treatment today... πŸ€— Thank you to her wonderful Mum Sylice for allowing me to share Darlas Cranial story. πŸ’•
Darla had a tough start after a relatively straightforward delivery... She swallowed muconium, had difficulty getting her first breath and had to spend a week in NICU on a feeding tube with IV antibiotics.
Darla had tensions in her upper back, neck muscles and diaphragm, with retained shock from the hardship of her first week.
I worked very gently to encourage relaxation in the muscles and expansion and mobility to her Diaphragm. (shock can cause tightness to the Diaphragm, as can the life saving, daily medical checks in NICU)
This helps to relieve any strain in the central nervous system, in particular, the vagus nerve which is responsible for heart rate variability, regular digestion and overall homeostasis (balance in the body.)
During treatment, her muscles and diaphragm unwound, she was completely relaxed and was snoozing soundly as we put her back in her car seat. πŸ’• An all round perfect first cranial treatment. πŸ’•
(I forgot to take a picture of the STUNNING lavender cardigan and matching Lace bow that Darlas Glamourous Nana Siobhan made for her.... Swipe to see the Booties... 😍😍 Sorry I had to take them off for the treatment Granny Shiv!! 😁)

Hi Everybody. My Dad Georgie the Legend is taking part in The Irish Air Ambulance Camino Way Cycle in April where he will cycle 338kms in memory of my beautiful Mum Jean Blackshields. (He is 72 yrs old!)

If you are considering a charity to donate to this Christmas, please consider The Irish Community Rapid Response Ambulance crew. They are NOT government funded and it costs €3,500 for each lifesaving trip. They were amazing to us as a family in the most difficult time in our lives and although our story did not have a positive outcome, it's important to us to show our gratitude for their help in anyway we can.

So thank you from me and George for any donation you can provide. And HAPPY CHRISTMAS! πŸ’•πŸ’•πŸ’•

Love, Lorraine
