Inspiring as always, thank you Rebekah!

A decade ago presented the research on high intensity progressive resistance training for post menopausal women at an International Osteoporosis Foundation conference. For those with low bone mass and without fracture history, the research increasingly points to the importance of moderate to high intensity resistance training, with weights specifically, as a means of preventing bone loss and even increasing bone mass.

We hear from those of you who feel intimidated by lifting weights, and especially the idea of heavy lifting. And if you’re like many of our followers with other conditions and injuries, it’s understandable if you also have concerns. The research frequently excluded folks like you in trials.

The key is to safely and slowly add additional load and get the guidance you need for your own body. Rebekah began on this journey when she was diagnosed with osteoporosis, over 20 years ago! She built her way to heavier loads over time - it’s why it’s called PROGRESSIVE overload. Like many of you, she has a number of challenges in her body that did and still can provide setbacks. Which is why it’s about working within your own parameters, and what YOUR body can tolerate. You are your own control in this scientific experiment of changing your bones and your body. Don’t compare yourself to others.

But DO revisit your beliefs and expectations that might hold you back from your strength potential. In this photo our Australia faculty Lisa Jackson is lifting a weight that she worked up to and technique she practiced.

The Buff Bones method is about getting you to these points of greater threshold! We focus initially on organizing your body and building a solid foundation, developing confidence in lifting your own body weight and then adding external weights, serving you in your daily activities and also in the gym. It’s a process as you cultivate strength and incrementally increase your load tolerance.

You may not yet know what’s possible – have faith in your body and its possibilities. You can and will get stronger with consistency and commitment.

Friends, my annual EXERCISE ADVENT starts December 1st: WHO’S HERE FOR IT?

I can’t believe it, but this is my 11th annual exercise advent. I wasn’t sure if I would do it again (a lot of work!) but decided there was an area of the body that needs some support right now. This year’s theme is HEADS UP! 24 Moves for Your Head & Neck.

We’ll be covering little, big, stretchy, and strong movements for the head & neck—including moves for the jaw and vestibular (balance) system. This is an often-neglected area of the body and I wanted to give everyone a big ol' pile of moves to use for strengthening and relaxing this often-tense area.

If you're new to Nutritious Movement, here's how my exercise advent works: every day I give you a new exercise to try, and you keep practicing them all each day. At the end of 24 days—surprise!—you've added a daily dose of mindful movement to this sometimes hectic season.

Follow along here or, for less social media time, you can find exercises added daily to my website: https://www.nutritiousmovement.com/exercise-advent-2024-heads-up-24-moves-for-your-head-neck/
You can find exercises from the ten prior advents via that same link (now in bio).

Fresh off this week’s conference, we wanted to share info that you’d be interested in from the presentation by Dr. Deborah Kado, MD whom Rebekah worked with on the Bone Health Working Group for … only to discover that already provided a terrific post that would be better to share directly than recreate!

Repost from :
Are we focusing too much on bone health and not enough on muscle strength? Muscles help prevent falls in the first place or help you heal faster if you fall.
We need to be better at preventing loss of independence and mobility. As Dr. Kado asked in her lecture: “Could muscle be the most important factor in contributing to fracture risk in older persons?”
___
For those of you who think, ‘well sure, we know that muscle strength is important for bone health’, this is not the typical statement you hear from a physician presenting at a scientific osteoporosis conference, identifying the role of muscle strength as perhaps more important than bone density to outcomes for osteoporosis.

So yes, it’s a big deal, and the future is looking brighter for exercise and its role in fracture prevention – especially as we midlife women carry the torch to change the path for our bodies to reduce fracture incidents moving forward!
