🎭MEET THE PLAYWRIGHT OF THE TANGLER ::🎭

Hugh Brendan McCann (1940–2024)

From Kilconny in Belturbet, Brendan McCann was an award-winning playwright and poet, as well as a lifelong educator and community leader.
After Belturbet Dramatic Society was revived in the 1970s, Brendan wrote and directed its first stage production, Perry Como’s Leaving Town, which won the All-Ireland title for Belturbet Dramatic Society.

Over the decades that followed, he wrote 21 plays - many based in his native border region. His plays produced by the drama society include Kernaghan’s Law, Lebanon Patrol and The Tangler in Court. After his border drama ‘Volkswagen Joe’ reached the All-Ireland finals, it was adapted into a TV drama broadcast on RTÉ, winning numerous national and international awards.

He was also an active community organiser, a key figure in All-Ireland Skittles and a co-founder of the Festival of the Erne.
Brendan devoted 36 years to Loreto College, Cavan, serving as a highly-regarded English teacher and vice-principal, before 11 years as the first lay principal there.

The first of his plays for the school, ‘The Choir Practice’ was inspired by his wife’s choir at Drumalee Church and gave Tina Kellegher her first acting role.

In 2017, Brendan McCann published a poetry collection called ‘Erne Valley’.

The Belturbet Dramatic Society are grateful to the family of Brendan for gifting us the script- for the next revival of the group .
Looking forward to seeing somebof you the weekend after Easter

🎭 Meet The Playwright – Nicola Keane
Dum Vivimus Vivamus — as we live, let us live — is a thoughtful and moving piece exploring life, connection, and the quiet strength of human relationships.
Written by Nicola Keane, a playwright from Co. Mayo, this work leans into the darker, quieter corners of everyday life, often lit by a subtle flicker of humour. Her writing captures the moments we often overlook — the pauses, the tensions, the things left unsaid.
Nicola’s work has been featured at the Claremorris Fringe Festival on numerous occasions, including a win in 2016 and a runner-up placing in 2022. She has also been shortlisted for Listowel Writers’ Week and Druid New Writing, and her work has appeared in the Bolster & Boom showcase at the Cornmill Theatre, Co. Leitrim.
With Dum Vivimus Vivamus, she invites audiences to sit with these characters, to recognise something of themselves, and to reflect on what it truly means to live

Booking is available on eventbrite or by contacting any cast or committee member.

MEET THE CAST OF DUM VIVIMUS, VIVAMUS:

🎭 Noeleen Shannon
By day, Noeleen brings calm and balance as a yoga teacher, and was recently spotted frolicking in a field, with a crown of flowers on her head — by night, she steps into the lives of three very different women. and still finds time to centre her chakras… we’re not sure if it’s acting or a superpower.
Noeleen was Last on stage as the centipede in the 1990 Convent of Mercy production of James and the Giant Peach, she now returns with something altogether more complex and layered.
Joining the newly resurrected Belturbet Dramatic Society was a step outside her comfort zone — one she’s embraced fully. Through workshops facilitated by James O’Donnell and Declan Drohan, she has explored new techniques, including the Chekhov approach, unlocking creativity and artistic freedom.
Noeleen is excited to continue learning, growing, and challenging herself… and is more than ready to take on the challenge of playing Lorraine Doyle, Debbie, and Maggie O’Dwyer in Dum Vivimus Vivamus — three characters at very different stages of life, each facing their own demons.

Booking available on eventbrite or by contacting any cast or committee member.
