Quote of the Day

Our words matter. Choose wisely and know that children carry our words with them throughout their life.

16/04/2024

Allowing children to take risks and fail is very difficult for most caregivers. We want our children to be successful, but the greatest lessons come from failure, not success. Children need to skin their knees, say the wrong thing, and forget to turn in their homework. They need to experience the world so they can navigate it when they are not in your care.

Anyone else?

Eight years ago, I surprised my (autistic) godson with tickets to Legoland.
His response when we showed him the tickets was shy laughter, 20ish seconds of silence, and then "...Can I have a Dr Pepper?"

It was hilarious. :) And the reason it was hilarious was because his mum and I acknowledged *exactly* how ecstatic he was inside his head, and we didn't place any importance on immediate performative responses. After all, it was quite a surprise to deal with in the moment. (And 8 years on, the "Can I have a Dr Pepper?" line is still a funny story that we tell with love and appreciation. Because that's how you do it- mutual humour and warmth, rather than obsessing over whether their behaviour meets expectations.) -Chris Bonnello - Autistic Author

[Black text on white background with holly in the corners, reading:
"Shout-out to the other autistic children who offended people while unwrapping Christmas presents, because even though you were really happy with the present, the look on your face and the tone of your voice didn’t match their expectations.
To those who learned you were supposed to be more “visibly” happy, or else kind people would believe you were rude or ungrateful.
And to those who still have ‘performance anxiety’ about opening presents, even now as an adult."]

The holiday season can be a challenging time for autistic families, as changes in routine, socializing, and traditions may cause discomfort and stress. However, it doesn't have to be that way. Join us for a webinar with .ie, an autistic adult and parent of three autistic children, who will share her insights and experiences to help families make the holiday season a smooth transition and fun for everyone involved. We want to help you overcome the challenges that come with the holidays and create a warm and inclusive celebration for your family.

My Story

Having recently concluded 11 years of third level education, I have no doubt in my mind that I’ve found my calling. Everyday, I have the privilege of teaching and supporting the most awe-inspiring demographic on the planet; children and adolescents. Not all, but many of my clients have a diagnosed disability of some sort.

In my personal opinion, the label “disability” is somewhat dubious. Having the label myself, I firmly believe that one is only disabled if some thing (or lack there of) in their environment is preventing them from accessing a happy and fulfilling life. Once a person is able to exercise choice, independence, satisfaction and socially meaningful connections, then life is undoubtedly worth living.

In my work I provide Early Intervention and Teen Mentoring services to children and teens who, for whatever reason, require help in navigating social, language, educational and/or behavioural barriers at home and/or in school. I don’t just ‘teach’ - I listen, observe, support and CELEBRATE my learners’ achievements every step of the way. We all need to feel like we are progressing in life, regardless of how fast - children and adults alike.
