Noise-induced hearing loss is caused by damage to the hair cells that are found in our inner ear. Hair cells are small sensory cells that convert the sounds we hear into electrical signals that travel to the brain. Once damaged, our hair cells cannot grow back, causing permanent hearing loss.

Noise-induced hearing loss can result from a one-time exposure to a very loud sound or from listening to loud sounds over an extended period 🔊

To reduce their risk of noise-induced hearing loss, you can do the following:
1. Identify sources of loud sounds (lawnmowers, power tools or music) and try to reduce exposure 🔕
2. Adopt the 60/60 rule (listen to music for 60 minutes at 60dB and take a break). For reference, a coffee grinder can be 90dB!
3. Wear ear protection! Our Audiologists offer custom ear protection moulds. These are great for people who work in noisy environments! 🎧

PAEDIATRIC ASSESSMENTS 🧩👶🏼

Our clinical audiologists at Fernhurst Lodge offer a wide variety of audiology assessments for children 👂🏻

9months to 3 years: We provide VRA which stands for visual reinforcement audiometry. We assess how a child reacts to sound. When they respond to a sound we reward the child with an animation on the screen 🐶

3 years + We provide performance audiometry 🎧 This is an interactive way of testing your child’s hearing level with the use of toys. Your child listens to sounds through our headphones and performs a task using a toy when they hear the sound 👂🏻

All of these results are plotted on a chart called an audiogram to show how well your child hears in terms of frequency and intensity 📈

Your ears help with your balance. Because of this role, hearing loss may impair your balance.

Your ear contains 3 semicircular canals. These canals look like three tiny connected tubes or hoops. It's their job to help you balance. The canals are filled with fluid and lined with tiny hairs. When your head moves, the fluid in the canals move which force the hairs to move. The hairs send this information about your position to your brain. The brain then sends messages to your muscles that help keep you balanced.

When you spin around and stop, the reason you feel dizzy is because the fluid in your semicircular canals continues to move around for a bit. This tells your brain that you're still spinning even when you aren't. When the fluid stops moving, you will stop feeling dizzy.

We offer a comprehensive range of diagnostic audiological assessments for ages 9months+.

The assessment will include having a look into your ears, conducting a test of your middle ear system, a hearing test and a speech test.
