Yes that’s table salt!

Inexpensive, easy to purchase, encouraging water intake especially in extreme cold spells and a natural electrolyte for your equine.

Having a kettle at the yard to add to cold water can aid the level of intake while having fresh water at hand is essential too!

Tips for preventing Winter colic among equines:

• Rug accordingly as overheating a horses natural body temperature can affect their appetite

• Have a kettle on standby to adjust water temperature

• Fresh water available in the event pipes are frozen

• Ad-Lib hay as always to keep the digestive system functioning correctly

• Mash to offer rather than a cube (where possible)

• Daily turnout for movement of the anatomy (paddock/arena)

• Performance horses acquire extra warm up and cool down time when in work

• Introduce changes slowly

So very often we only associate colic with concentrates, however the risk of colic from lack of water intake is a danger for equines.

The average horse drinks between 50 and 60 litres of water per day however if a horse does not have access to water, it can colic within four hours!

Water is essential for fibre intake and digestion. Access to water should be available at all times!

Hunting season is not long away, while a lot of full time hunters will slowly come back into work next month and be eating hard feed, here is the two main items they need while on the hunting field!

• A mainly fibre based diet
• Oil

It’s a long day hunting so they need be feeling full rather than a quick energy release there is many great choices available such as:

Top Spec: Fibre Mash, Linseed Mash or Fibre Plus Cubes (which can be soaked)

Red Mills: Define and Shine

Equerry Conditioning Mash

Choices of oil: Linseed Oil, Flaxseed Oil or Karron Oil

Horses should always be offered turnout when or where possible, ad-lib hay, haylage (depending if the equine has any health history) and concentrates to follow.

Do you know the benefits of feeding your horse Zinc?

Zinc is an essential mineral needed (usually got from hay) that affects the horse’s hair, hoofs and immune system.

Studies show biotin has no scientific proof in aiding hoof strength. This produc can be purchased on Horze for as little as €11.99.

When combining Zinc with Copper it can provide extra nutrients which:

reduce physitis, osteochondrosis, wobbler syndrome, and other manifestations of developmental orthopedic disease.

A huge amount of equine owners, both experienced and inexperienced do not listen to their horse and mistake pain for bad behaviour.

We are still ten steps backwards in Ireland regarding using an equine nutrition advisor annually and it is down to ignorance.

When you purchase or have a horse who is not in great condition why rush a farrier, vet & physio when the horse’s nutrition is not up to standard yet? A horse needs to be healthy and have enough strength before a pair of shoes and treatment.

Upon checking a horse for ulcers (when ignored they can transform into hindgut ulcers), health risk and possible conditions I can advise you on the way forward. If a vet is needed for medication or an emergency then advise will be given promptly.

Listen to your horse more as 9/10 times it is not poor behaviour.
Some signs to indicate pain:

Bucking
Cow kicking
Bitting
Not moving forward
Lack of energy
Knocking poles
Changing appetite
Dipping it’s hind while being groomed
Refusing to jump
Chewing wood
Loose bowls

Cube Vs Mix: Know the difference?

Although it might state it is the same, there are some differences in the two.

Cubes are compressed and usually not covered in molasses (sugar). Studies have shown they are less likely to make a horse hot depending on the cereal content and heat included in the chosen cube.

Mixes have a higher cereal content which can make a horse fizzy and they usually have a higher rate of sugar due to the molasses covering the mix (hence why it smells so good). Mixes can be a little more expensive compared to cubes.

Mervue.ie

My go to instant probiotic for over all health in the stomach and hindgut is in syringe form, made by Mervue in Cork.

Highly recommended for performance and leisure horses when required.
Take into consideration travelling, competing and change of environments can upset equines.

Definitely one to keep in your travel or grooming box!
