Measles is an extremely infectious virus that can cause pneumonia, encephalitis and, sometimes, death. Cases in Europe have jumped by 45 times and it is only a matter of time until a similar outbreak happens in Ireland. The cause of the outbreak is reduced uptake of MMR vaccine.

Measles vaccination is safe and effective and is available free of charge to all children under the national immunisation program. If you have previously decided not to vaccinate you can avail of a catch-up vaccination now, even as an adult.

Now is the time to ensure that MMR vaccines are up-to-date and children are protected before an entirely preventable measles outbreak arrives on our shores and wreaks havoc, writes Catherine Conlon

Drumkeeran Health Centre

Drumkeeran Health Centre is a small General Practice in the picturesque village of Drumkeeran, Co. Leitrim. Dr. Rosaleen Harkin ran the practice for many years. Upon her retirement, Dr. Aidan Mackey became the GP Principal. In September 2015, I applied for the vacant position and was successful in doing so. Dr. Cassie McVeigh joined the practice in 2019. Nurse Mairead Crawford is another valued member of the primary care team.

The practice is in a HSE building in the centre of the village. It has parking, including a disabled bay, and is wheelchair accessible. As well as a doctor we also have a nurse and a full-time secretary. Also on site are a public health nurse Siobhan Reynolds, a community psychiatric nurse, a dentist and a dietician.

It is a modern, well equipped practice. We offer a full range of medical services. It is fully computerised.

It is a dispensing practice. Given the lack of pharmacies locally, certain GMS patients are eligible to have their medications dispensed to them directly from our practice - enquire for more details.
