World Mental Health Day

Making the invisible visible. 🌻

Good health must include mental health.

The World Health Organisation is campaigning for people affected by a humanitarian crisis whose lives have been completely displaced and are experiencing extreme trauma should have access to the mental health support they need.

What we learn in the media, whether it's global issues or concerns closer to home, can have a significant impact on our mental well-being. On a community level, mental health issues might be affecting a neighbour, relative, friend, colleague, or yourself.

Steps to protect your mental health include: being aware of when to take a break from the news, staying connected, being physically active, and maintaining routines. Engage in meaningful and enjoyable activities.

Seek support from healthcare practitioners and recognised mental health groups:

- Samaritans Ireland Call free on 116 123 (open 24/7, 365 days a year)
- PIETA
- Crisis helpline: 1800 247 247. Text HELP to 51444 (open 24/7)

World Ostomy Day

Making the invisible visible. 🌻

Ostomy is a surgical procedure that alters the way your body eliminates urine or stool due to a malfunction of the urinary or digestive system.

The common myth is that only older people require this surgery, but in reality, that isn't true. Ostomates can and do live full lives, participating in sports, swimming, and enjoying loving relationships.

Causes can include:

- Diverticulitis
- Congenital disabilities
- Cancer
- Bowel obstruction
- Injury
- Inflammatory Bowel Disease

The Sunflower offers support and confidence, indicating to others that the wearer has a non-visible disability.

There is a great deal to learn about ostomies. Discover more by visiting our website:

World Deaf Day

Making the invisible visible. 🌻

430 million people across the world live with disabling hearing loss.

Hearing loss occurs for different reasons and can lead to feelings of isolation.

But there are ways to include the Deaf community and those who are hard of hearing.

Sign language interpreters play a vital role in ensuring access and participation for the Deaf community. The use of captioning is a simple yet effective solution to ensure that communication is accessible during meetings, concerts, presentations, theatre performances, and many other events.

Simple steps, such as facing the person you are talking to so they can lip-read. Moving to a quieter and well-lit area can also help.

Have a pen and paper handy or use the notes function on your phone to write down what you want to say.

And remember the three Rs: repeat, repeat, rephrase.

We are proud to work with European Federation of Hard of Hearing People to bring greater awareness.

23/09/2025

The announcement by President Donald Trump claiming there is a link between Tylenol and autism, and that pregnant women should stop taking the paracetamol painkiller, has caused incredible worry today among the community.

Adam Harris, chief executive of the autism charity Asiam.ie, said he was “truly horrified” by the remarks, which he believed “seek to bring our community back several decades in terms of an awareness and understanding”.

The charity also stated that "Such remarks are not grounded in credible scientific evidence and risk promoting a deeply medicalised, stigmatising, and ultimately harmful view of Autistic people."

We now have greater awareness about autism, which has contributed to the increase in diagnoses. That is a positive step towards reducing stigma and improving understanding, creating a more inclusive world where all autistic individuals are seen as such and are heard.
