As we step into the New Year, it’s a good time to pause and check in with ourselves and each other. Our everyday lifestyle habits matter more than we sometimes realise regular sleep, nourishing food, movement, time outdoors, and moments of rest all play a role in protecting our mental health.
If things feel heavy, you don’t have to manage alone. Seeking counselling or talking support is a positive, proactive step, not a last resort. Reaching out early can make a real difference.
Loneliness can affect anyone, and staying connected is one of the strongest protective factors for our mental wellbeing. A message, a call, a walk with a friend, or joining a local group can help us feel grounded and supported. Small connections count.
Please remember that support is available. Family Resource Centres offer a welcoming place for information, groups, and guidance. Your GP is also a good starting point and can help with signposting to appropriate supports and services.
This year, let’s be mindful of our habits, kinder to ourselves, and more connected with one another. Looking after mental health is something we can all do together. Dr Thobeka
