-> Hip Replacement
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon makes an incision over the side of the thigh, removes the diseased parts of the hip joint, and replaces them with new, artificial parts. Why it’s performed
Your doctor may recommend hip replacement if you have significant pain, inflammation and damage to your hip joint due to conditions such as:
• Osteoarthritis (most common)
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis)
• Injury such as hip fracture
• Tumor in the hip joint

-> Knee replacement -
Knee replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is generally regarded as an effective treatment for end-stage knee arthritis. It results in improved knee function and significantly relieves severe pain caused by degenerative joint diseases. All knee replacement procedures are generally divided into 2 major groups, depending on whether the knee is replaced totally or partially. A knee joint is often compared to a hinge which allows to flex, extend and limitedly rotate the lower leg. Structurally it resembles three separate joints: a slightly rounded end of the thigh bone forms 2 separate articulations with a slightly hollow end of the shinbone which has a mobile kneecap on top. The most common indication for total knee replacement is severe osteoarthritis that affects all surfaces of these synergic joints and causes pain which is unresponsive to medical management.

-> Cataracts
What is a cataract? The eye is like a camera where the retina is the film at the back, and the lens is positioned at the front of the eye, just behind the pupil. A cataract is a clouding in the lens of the eye. The lens in your eye focuses light and is constructed of proteins and fluid. The proteins are arranged in a parallel fashion to allow the light to pass through the lens without interruption. The pupil dilates and contracts to control the level of light reaching the retina and the lens adjusts automatically to allow you to see objects clearly at various distances.

-> Bariatrics
Overweight and obesity is defined as ”abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health” (World Health Organisation, 2017). It is a progressive, chronic and complex disease affecting all ages and genders. Body mass index (BMI) is the most widely used measure of obesity in clinical practice as direct assessment of body fat is not readily available. BMI defined as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2), is considered to be the best available population marker for monitoring trends in overweight and obesity in adults, children and young people over time.

🏥☀Brendan's Knee Surgery in Valencia ☀🏥

"I recently went over to Spain for a knee replacement with Healthcare Abroad, they were great to work with, they looked after all the paperwork and all the medical details."

I would like to thank Paul and Debbie and all the people over in Ireland and all the medical staff at the Vithas Clinic in Valencia. A big shoutout to the drivers who brought from the hotel to the clinic and to airport and anywhere else we went. John Adam and Frankie you were brilliant, also a special mention to Amy the lovely woman who did all the logistics in the clinic 👍

A special big thank you to Sergio, the physiotherapy got me back on my legs again. He was a total professional.

Healthcare Aboard are a great bunch of people to work with, they had me in Spain in a couple of weeks. I was told I would have to wait 3 years to get my knee surgery done back home so it was great it went so fast.

I would recommend anyone in pain to do it now. Don't wait. Get it touch with Healthcare Abroad. They were brilliant - thanks for everything.

My HSE Reimbursed Breast Reduction at State-of-the-art Barcelona Clinic – Elizabeth’s Story “Dr. Gomez is fantastic at what he does, I love him, I want to bring him home. He’s a dote.”

“I found out about Healthcare Abroad from my GP, I called at the end of August and it was very efficient within three or four weeks I was done. The efficiency was ideal because I wanted it over and done with, I’ve been suffering since I was 18. Then I had a baby which made things even harder. Bending down all the time was killing my back. Since the operation the back pain is gone. I couldn’t believe it. I went over by myself and it wasn’t an issue.”

“The nurses were amazing; Dr. Gomez was outstanding I would bring him home in my suitcase if I could. Luisana from Healthcare Abroad was over with us, she was fantastic, she helped us answer any questions we had. The doctors and nurses all had English and were so kind and patient.”

“The IM Clinic was like a 5-star hotel, the rooms were stunning, it was so clean. There was two other Irish women over at the same time which was a big comfort. Me and Kim were staying in the same hotel, and we got on like a house on fire. It was brilliant as it helped to have someone to talk to and go for dinner with in the evenings.”

“I would recommend Healthcare Abroad to anyone who is thinking about getting breast reduction treatment.”

Robert from Cork’s Neck Surgery in Spain - “There’s no waiting lists and the surgery costs are reimbursed by the HSE, more people need to know about this”

“About nine weeks before surgery, I started having terrible pain in my neck and shoulder. I couldn’t sleep, couldn’t work, and was in agony day and night. When I finally had an MRI, they found two damaged discs pressing on my spine. I was told I could be waiting up to three years for surgery. I couldn’t live like that.”

Getting it Sorted
“I first heard about Healthcare Abroad on the radio. I mentioned it to my doctor, and she said to give them a call. I spoke with Paul, who explained everything. From that first call, everything was organised for me. Paul helped me with the forms, contacted my credit union, and guided me through every step.”

“Then I was speaking with Sorcha and Debbie, who handled the medical questions and updates. After a week I had my surgery date confirmed. The process was easy, I called and everything was arranged with very little stress.”

Unreal care the whole way
“When I got to Spain, I was met at the airport by one of the Healthcare Abroad drivers and brought straight to the hotel. Everyone I met was sound, and we made friends with the other Irish people coming for different surgeries. The next morning, I met the neurosurgeon, Dr Saab, for a consultation. He explained that both discs would be repaired together. “

"I went for surgery that evening, it was a two-level fusion of discs in my neck. When I woke up the next morning, the pain was gone. To wake up pain-free after nine weeks of suffering was unbelievable. The care at HCB Dénia hospital was incredible, the doctors, nurses, everyone was spot on.”

The Future
“I’m looking forward to getting back to work and back to normal life. Healthcare Abroad were amazing from start to finish. I’d recommend them to anyone. You’ll be looked after every step of the way, and you’ll come home feeling like a new person.”

HSE Reimbursed Bilateral Hip Replacement in Spain - Fiona’s story
“Everyone here has been so sweet. I feel like I’ve made so many new friends. The kindness, the care, the organisation — it’s all been fantastic.”

“I’d been struggling with hip pain for a long time and had been waiting for surgery, but it just wasn’t happening. Every day was getting harder.”

“I knew there had to be a better way, so I started researching. I googled my butt off! I spent hours reading about different options, different types of surgery, and I knew I wanted an anterior hip replacement, ideally both hips done at once.”

“I came across information about the Cross Border Directive, and that’s when I found Healthcare Abroad. I rang the number and everything from that very first call was so easy.”

“The team were incredibly friendly, efficient, and helpful. They explained every step of the process clearly and always checked in to make sure I was okay and understood everything. I felt really supported from the beginning.”

“It all happened quickly. I called in June, and by September 14th I was on a plane to Spain. Once I’d made the decision, everything just fell into place. It was such a relief to know I finally had a date and a plan.”

“When I arrived in Dénia, the whole experience was lovely. Everyone at Healthcare Abroad and HCB Dénia has been so welcoming and kind. Everything was so well organised and I never had to worry about a thing.”

“My surgeon, Dr. Lucas Kleijn, was fabulous. He’s not only lovely to talk to but also incredibly experienced. I’d done a lot of research before coming, and I learned how important it is to choose a surgeon who’s done many anterior hip replacements. That gave me so much confidence.”

“The physiotherapy has been wonderful. It’s so thorough and supportive, they’re with you for every exercise, guiding you and making sure you’re doing it right. They’ve helped me with strengthening, TENS therapy, lymphatic drainage massage, and all the little things that make recovery smoother. I almost fall asleep during the massages because they’re so relaxing!”

“I’m already feeling stronger every day. I can’t wait to get back to dancing, doing the splits, and returning to strength training and reformer Pilates. Pilates has always been my thing, it’s amazing for core strength and overall mobility —so I’m really excited to get back to it.”

“I’m just really grateful. This whole experience has been life-changing. I feel like I’ve got my life back.”

"I've lost 7 stone in 18 weeks" Craig's 45 kg weight loss after Gastric Bypass Surgery with Healthcare Abroad ✅

"I’m doing more with the kids, doing more with my wife – I don’t just want to be sitting around anymore. I feel younger, I want to do more, and I want to go out and enjoy life instead of just coming home from work and sitting down. My sleep apnea is gone, my blood pressure is back to normal and I don't need to take medication anymore. "

"If I had to sum it up in a sentence or two, I’d say: for me, it’s been life-changing. You can see it for other people too – I’ve seen patients here getting hips and knees done, and even just 10 days post-op, they’re moving more freely. Things like that you just don’t see back home. What happens here really is life-changing.”

“My life can start moving forward now” – Dona’s Spinal Fusion in HCB Benidorm with Healthcare Abroad

“I got a spinal fusion in Alicante with Healthcare Abroad. I was sceptical about it in the beginning, but I’ve been treated like royalty since I got here. Scott the driver has been amazing, he has been phoning 2 or 3 times a day checking in all the time and checking in with my husband too. Sean the driver was fantastic too, always very friendly and helpful.”

“I needed back surgery, a spinal fusion. I was going to go Northern Ireland but I would have been out of pocket over €10,000. A friend said what about the EU cross border directive, and I said what is that? This is too good to be true I was thinking, but I was in so much pain. I spoke to my GP about it, she hadn’t really heard of it but I made the decision to call, and I’m glad I did.”

“Paul answered and he made the whole process so easy. The whole team was very patient and understanding. I got my spinal fusion in HCB Benidorm and Dr. Karim Ben Ghezala was the surgeon. I have to say he was brilliant; he could answer any questions we had.”

“Up in Donegal people only know about going to Northern Ireland, but I’ll be spreading the word about Spain. My GP is looking forward to seeing me come back and I’ll be spreading the word of Healthcare Abroad. It’s lovely to have my husband here, but I would have been fine here on my own, because Scott has been so amazing.”

“My life can start moving forward now. I was in pain for years, but my mental health has totally changed now that I know there’s light at the end of the tunnel. I am getting better. We are moving forward.”
