-> Hip Replacement
Hip replacement surgery is a procedure in which a surgeon makes an incision over the side of the thigh, removes the diseased parts of the hip joint, and replaces them with new, artificial parts. Why it’s performed
Your doctor may recommend hip replacement if you have significant pain, inflammation and damage to your hip joint due to conditions such as:
• Osteoarthritis (most common)
• Rheumatoid arthritis
• Osteonecrosis (avascular necrosis)
• Injury such as hip fracture
• Tumor in the hip joint

-> Knee replacement -
Knee replacement surgery, also known as arthroplasty, is generally regarded as an effective treatment for end-stage knee arthritis. It results in improved knee function and significantly relieves severe pain caused by degenerative joint diseases. All knee replacement procedures are generally divided into 2 major groups, depending on whether the knee is replaced totally or partially. A knee joint is often compared to a hinge which allows to flex, extend and limitedly rotate the lower leg. Structurally it resembles three separate joints: a slightly rounded end of the thigh bone forms 2 separate articulations with a slightly hollow end of the shinbone which has a mobile kneecap on top. The most common indication for total knee replacement is severe osteoarthritis that affects all surfaces of these synergic joints and causes pain which is unresponsive to medical management.

-> Cataracts
What is a cataract? The eye is like a camera where the retina is the film at the back, and the lens is positioned at the front of the eye, just behind the pupil. A cataract is a clouding in the lens of the eye. The lens in your eye focuses light and is constructed of proteins and fluid. The proteins are arranged in a parallel fashion to allow the light to pass through the lens without interruption. The pupil dilates and contracts to control the level of light reaching the retina and the lens adjusts automatically to allow you to see objects clearly at various distances.

-> Bariatrics
Overweight and obesity is defined as ”abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that presents a risk to health” (World Health Organisation, 2017). It is a progressive, chronic and complex disease affecting all ages and genders. Body mass index (BMI) is the most widely used measure of obesity in clinical practice as direct assessment of body fat is not readily available. BMI defined as weight in kilograms divided by the square of height in meters (kg/m2), is considered to be the best available population marker for monitoring trends in overweight and obesity in adults, children and young people over time.

Meet the Team - Week 1️⃣
The first team member we will meet in the series is Josh, the Logistics Manager based in our Denia offfices 🏢

Josh works his magic behind the scenes, scheduling appointments and working with our team of drivers in Denia, Alicante, and Benidorm to make sure all of our patients are in the rights places at the right times.

Patients often praise the efficiency and ease of their stay inside and out of the hospital while they are in Spain, and Josh's role can not be understated in that✅

Next week we will meet Paul, our Chief Operations Officer 💼

Did you know ❔❔ Many of our patients use financing through the Credit Union to cover the upfront costs for treatment under the EU Cross Border Directive. Sally recently had a Hip Replacement in Valencia, and tells us how straightforward the process was for her.
🏨I went in, chatted with the loan officer, and he rang a man called Paul Byrne who works with Healthcare Abroad. While I was sitting there, the loan was granted straight away. You pay it for a little while after your operation is done, and it takes around 20 weeks to get reimbursed.

Henock's Cataracts Surgery in Spain 🏥☀

“My vision had been getting worse for a long time, but in the last few years it became very bad. I’ve been living and working in Kilkenny for years but it got to the point where I couldn’t see properly anymore and I had to stop working.”

"I was on a waiting list in Ireland, but I felt like I was waiting too long while my eyesight was getting worse and worse. I knew I had to make a decision, so I contacted Healthcare Abroad. Honestly, it was the right decision.”

“As soon as I arrived in Valencia, everything was organised for me. I had my checks done in the morning and my first surgery the same day.”

“I was treated at Vithas Valencia Hospital, and the care I received from Dr Garfella and Dr Montero was outstanding. They made me feel comfortable, answered all my questions, and gave me complete confidence.”

“When I woke up the next day and opened my eyes, I could see clearly again. It was an incredible feeling.I had my second eye done the following day, and everything went perfectly.”

“Paul from the Healthcare Abroad team also helped me arrange a loan through the Credit Union, which meant I could cover the cost of treatment without delay. That support made a huge difference.”

“From the airport pickup to the hospital staff, everyone was so kind, professional, and supportive. I felt completely looked after. Now I can see clearly again. I can drive, I can work, and I feel like I am born again.”

Brendan's Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Surgery in Valencia 🏥☀

“I used to be waking up three or four times a night with pain… now I’m sleeping again.”

“I was told I’d be waiting months for carpal tunnel surgery in Ireland, but my partner heard about Healthcare Abroad and the radio, and I gave them a call. I was told I could be seen within a week, but that didn’t suit me so I could push it back to a date that suited me better.”

Carpal tunnel syndrome surgery is a procedure where the surgeon releases a ligament in the wrist to relieve pressure, pain and numbness on the hand.

“Healthcare Abroad organised everything for me — the drivers, John, Adam, and Frankie brought me from the hotel to all of my appointments. Amy and Kevin went to my appointments with me in case there were any doubts, but both times everything was clear.”

“I had the surgery on my right hand in March and now on my left hand this week, both times with Dr Jaime Alonso and the difference is incredible. I’m pain-free, sleeping properly again, and even back lifting weights.I’m looking forward to getting back doing DIY”

“I would say to anyone dealing with pain and long waiting lists, you don’t have to put up with it. I’d strongly recommend picking up the phone and seeing what Healthcare Abroad can do for you.”

Gráinne and Debbie from the Healthcare Abroad team recently visited the Wilton Ladies Community Group to raise awareness about treatment under the EU Cross Border Directive.

There was quite a turnout with around 40 members attending the session, part of the group’s weekly meet-ups and information talks. A great morning of conversation and learning.

We’re looking forward to hosting more of these sessions in the future.
If you would like us to visit your community group, please feel free to reach out or let us know in the comments!
