Laidback feeding…
Arguably the best position for mum and baby to:
1. Transfer milk to baby
2. A comfortable latch for mums ni***es
3. Give baby a little more control with the flow 💦
4. Develop strong baby neck and back muscles 🙌

There are many breastfeeding and non-breastfeeding related scientific studies that have demonstrated that you are more likely to succeed with what you intend to do just because you have some self-belief 💜

It’s still a work in progress but the slow and gradual improvement in my exercise tolerance has made my head even happier than my mum bod. My mum bod that has changed and will never be the same as pre-pregnancy…. But I don’t mind as long as I’m strong, in my muscles, my back, my pelvic floor AND my head

It’s OK to go forwards some days and backwards others as long as you keep working at feeling good about where you are, wherever that is 🧘‍♀️

Keep your internal dialogue POSITIVE. That’s where your strength truly lies 😘

Loved speaking today at a friend’s poetry book launch. Nobody can put into words the feelings and emotions of parenthood quite like 🥰

If you’re ever struggling with the rollercoaster that is parenting…. Read a few words, they may resonate and help you feel (like me) that we are never alone in this life challenge.

The newborn has a lot of things to get used to when they come out of the womb....

Space
Freedom to move
How to position themselves at the breast

Imagine you had been in a cramped space for a number of months, and for most of that time in one single position - with your chin tucked onto your chest, your body curled into the foetal position?

You'd be a bit stiff....!
Yes!

Positioning and latching at the breast takes coordination and freedom of movement for babies.

Mum can help by:
▶️ Latching & positioning techniques (see L&P post)
▶️ Giving baby time to 'stretch' themselves out
▶️ Encouraging head and neck extension (with tummy time on your chest or over your lap)

External professional help:
▶️ Enlist an IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) - specialist in infant feeding.
▶️ Consider an Osteopath / craniosacral therapist.

Have you ever felt 'touched out' when breastfeeding?

😫Me too!!! particularly during a growth spurt in the first few months of my baby's life.

😫His appetite seemed insatiable.
😫Not only that, he just wanted to be constantly in my arms.
😫This gave him great comfort but left me feeling over touched, every muscle in my body would be craving to relax and be apart from my baby just for 5 minutes.

🙌 BUT... Feeling like this is common and generally transient.
Breastfeeding mums feel a relief from these feelings once the cluster feeding ebbs away and/or someone takes the baby for a little while to give mum a break (even better).

However, there is also a more severe form of negative or unsettling feelings that mum's can sometimes experience.
D-MER ▶️ Dysphoric Milk Ejection Reflex
AVERSION ▶️ Intense feelings of aversion to putting your baby to the breast

D-MER is an abrupt emotional slump as the milk is 'letting down' or spraying and can be associated with nausea and brief negative feelings from mild sadness to self-loathing 😞
D-MER is thought to be related to a drop in dopamine hormone when milk is flowing. Acknowledging there is a problem and speaking to an IBCLC is often the first step to overcoming these feelings.

☺️ Other things that might help with feeling 'touched out', D-MER and aversion:
▶️Dark chocolate
▶️Caffeine
▶️Mindfulness
▶️Accepting/asking for help when you want some separation.
Speaking to a health professional (IBCLC/Midwife/GP).

This little bamboozle came into our lives at speed one year ago today in the comfort and calm of our home (thanks to the excellent care of Domino Midwives NMH and ) 💙
What a busy but joyful year it’s been!
Vinny is thankfully the happiest little button and we are ever so lucky to call our family complete with him 💙
He also is still a big fan of the ‘boo boo’ so I don’t think we’ll be stopping just yet! 💙
