Gabor Maté’s When the Body Says No is about that forgetting. About what happens when you spend a lifetime swallowing anger to keep the peace, shrinking your needs to stay loved, saying yes while your entire nervous system is screaming no. Medicine calls it random. Genetics. Bad luck.
Maté calls it something else: the body telling the truth you were never allowed to speak.

And it speaks in the only language powerful enough to stop you.
Illness.

1. Suppressed emotions don’t vanish. They relocate.
Anger you never voiced becomes chronic inflammation. Grief you never processed turns inward, confusing the immune system. Fear you learned to perform through grows quietly in the dark. When your voice goes silent, the body takes over. And eventually, that voice sounds like disease.

2. “Nice” is often self-abandonment dressed up as virtue.
The woman with lupus who never said no. The man with cancer who spent decades carrying everyone else’s emotions. We praise them as selfless. Maté names the cost: people who learned early that survival meant erasing themselves. The body remembers every erasure. If you can’t disappoint others, you end up betraying yourself daily—and the body keeps the receipts.

3. Stress isn’t what happens to you. It’s who you’re forced to pretend to be.
It’s not the job or the marriage alone. It’s feeling rage and showing calm. Wanting to leave and forcing yourself to stay. Saying “I’m fine” while you’re dissolving. Disease grows in the gap between your truth and your performance. The body doesn’t care how good your life looks. It only cares whether it’s honest.
4. The pattern begins when your feelings become unsafe.
A parent who couldn’t tolerate your emotions. Being turned into a caregiver before you were cared for. Learning that anger cost you love. So you became agreeable. Low-maintenance. Easy. You’ve lived that lesson ever since—while your body quietly kept score. Now it’s presenting the bill.

5. Healing means becoming who you were trained not to be.
You don’t heal by being calmer, nicer, or better at coping. You heal by saying no. By allowing anger to exist. By prioritizing yourself even when others call you selfish.

Cold water ritual, has been my life since January 2021, it has been one of my therapies... specially in the winter.

The winter in Ireland is not easy, with the dark days many people suffer from
Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), a type of depression linked to seasonal changes, typically starting in fall/winter with less sunlight.

Symptoms mirror major depression—low mood, fatigue, loss of interest, social withdrawal, increased sleep/appetite (especially carbs)—and improve in other seasons, though treatments like light therapy, CBT, hypnotherapy and medication if required.

If you suffer from seek help. For more information on how hypnotherapy can help you to face it contact - me on the link on my BIO.
