The Shepherd of the Green

From Slemish slopes to Tara’s height,
He walked the hills in morning light.
A captive once, a teacher grown,
With seeds of wisdom gently sown.

He spoke of three within the one,
Underneath the Irish sun;
The shamrock plucked from dew-kissed grass,
To watch the changing seasons pass.

No gold is found at rainbow’s end,
Like the steady spirit of a friend.
No magic charm or ancient spell,
Beats a heart that wishes others well.

So as the pipes begin to play,
And Dublin dons its green array,
May Patrick’s peace and steady hand,
Bless your home and bless this land.
