The Great Ethiopian Run in Addis Ababa raises funds for ORBIS Ireland. ORBIS Ireland was established in 2005 and is currently focused on one major project: to eliminate a highly prevalent and life destroying, blinding disease – trachoma – in some of the poorest regions of southern Ethiopia.

Over 45,000 people are expected to participate in Africa’s biggest road race – a challenging 10km at 10,000 feet above sea level.

A three-year-old patient of the Royal Victoria Eye and Ear Hospital, Dublin, has become the first person in Ireland to be treated with a genetic treatment for an inherited retinal degeneration.

Luxturna is licensed to treat biallelic RPE65-mediated retinal dystrophy.

It is hoped that this therapy and others follow will be able to beat a path toward better vision for those with inherited blindness. Although this child was treated abroad with funding from the HSE Ireland, it is expected that funding will soon be available for this therapy in Ireland. This year, there has been no fear of the winter months for this family, who dreaded the darker days, due to the improvement in the child's night vision.
