The number of people returning to their pre-injury level of sport isn't great, if you look at the research.

If you follow a Criteria-Driven Rehab approach however, your likelihood of returning to sport will definitely be greater, as we'll know that nothing was missed out along the way.

If you've just had surgery, or you've had surgery 1-3 years, but you haven't been able to return to sport, then give me a call.

Following surgery to the ankle or knee for example, it can be difficult for one to actually feel their quad or calf muscle working again ๐Ÿ’ช

Often the trauma of surgery, pain & post-op swelling lead to arthrogenic inhibition โŒ

Muscles can atrophy (reduce in size) relatively quickly, which is not what we want at all โฌ‡๏ธ

By using , we basically bypass the body's normal muscle activation process (which isn't working properly post surgery). An electrical impulse is sent directly from the machine to the motor unit (i.e. which is a motor neuron & it's associated muscle fibres) ๐ŸŽ‡

The idea is to activate as many muscle fibres as possible โฌ†๏ธ

I.e. what do you need to be able to do at each stage of rehab, that will inevitably enable you to achieve your end goal of playing unrestricted sport again ๐Ÿ€๐Ÿˆ๐Ÿ

The following timeline outlines this process.....

For example, once you can single-leg squat, you have earned the right to commence landing drills. Once you can competently land on 1-leg, you can commence jumping....and so on and so on.

๐Ÿ‹๏ธโ€โ™€๏ธ Implementing an injury prevention strategy is a first step to helping reduce your risk of injury. To help choose which areas of the body to focus on, we must understand epidemiology (i.e. which injuries occur, how often they occur & how they occur).

๐Ÿ€ In basketball, we can can clearly see that knee & ankle injuries have the highest prevalence, regardless of age, gender or playing level.

Are You Struggling With Hip or Groin Pain?

Typical symptoms often include pain when running & changing direction, pain on first moving after sitting for long periods, pain crossing your legs, lying on your side at night, and clicking or locking.

'Athletic Hip & Groin Pain' is an umbrella term that describes a variety of pathologies in and around the hip & pelvic girdle.

Imaging such as x-ray & MRI are not usually required (unless you're thinking of a bone stress fracture), as imaging often will show up so-called injured structures even in healthy individuals with no hip or groin pain.

The key to successful rehab & a return to sport is to initially assess for all the contributing factors. I perform a thorough methodical assessment of the hip, trunk, pelvis & ankle/calf, looking at mobility, control & strength. I also assess your running and how you change direction (for court & field-based sport athletes), as this is where the highest forces will be going through that area.
