Clanwilliam Institute is a registered Charity and was founded in 1982 with the objective of developing Systemic Psychotherapy services in Ireland. The Institute is now recognised as one of the leading centres in the country for the delivery of Systemic Family Therapy clinical services, including Supervision and Professional Training for mental health professionals.
Our mission is to provide high quality and accessible services to the general public including systemic psychotherapy, low cost psychotherapy, professional training, organisational consultancy and research. The values of excellence, accountability and transparency guided by ethical rigour and best practice inform all the Institutes activities.
Systemic Family Therapy is an approach used to understand a person's emotional and psychological distress and looks at the context in which it occurs, usually the family or relationship environment. We work with individuals, couples, children, parents, siblings and vulnerable adults.
All families experience distress at some point in the family life cycle. Our goal at Clanwilliam is to harness and strengthen family resources, and help family members work collaboratively towards solutions to their problems. Our belief is that families are the single most powerful resource available to individuals attempting to cope successfully with major psychological, relational or societal issues that are causing distress.
Benefits of family therapy include:
Build resilience in children and families
Help discover alternative and positive future paths
Strengthen the relationship network in people’s lives
Provide a supportive environment where people can talk about the stress in their lives
Encourage conversations about mental health and create and more open and compassionate environment in which children and families can thrive
Provide access to supports at the appropriate times without long wait times
Outcomes can include:
Stronger relationships
Coping skills for life stressors
Coping with trauma/bereavement
Resilient children
Stronger couples
Cohesive families
