On this date in 1956, more than 20 thousand women of all races marched in South Africa's executive capital city of Pretoria. They wanted the end of the "pass laws," which were a kind of internal passport system designed to keep people of different races segregated. The women marched to the Union Buildings and left bundles of petitions - more than 100,000 signatures - at the office door of the Prime Minister. They stood silently for 30 minutes, and then they began to sing a song that translates to "Now you have touched the women, you have struck a rock."A goal of modern Women's Days is to focus on the problems women still face in SA.

Hello everyone

I am Dr Nokukhanya Phungula. I am a Specialist Psychiatrist based at Evexia Psychiatric Day Hospital (Menlyn and Midstream) and Bryanwood Therapy and Assessment Centre. Beyond managing a wide range of mental illnesses, I am also interested in the individual. Thus, I invest time getting to know my patients so that I assist them holistically, tailoring the treatment plan to their specific needs.

Often, the causes of psychiatric disorders are multi factorial. Thus, I always strive to use a bio-psycho-social approach utilising the expertise of other mental health care practitioners such as psychologists, social workers and occupational therapists.

I find joy in providing a safe, warm and supportive space for my patients and their families. Helping people navigate living with a mental illness and improving their quality of life, is my goal. Moreover, I pay great attention to the importance of equipping and empowering my patient's support system on how to best support them.

My interests are: Depression, Bipolar Disorder, Anxiety Disorders, Substance Use Disorders , Adult ADHD, Eating Disorders, OCD, Psychotic Disorders such as Schizophrenia, and Maternal Mental Health.

Hello everyone

I am Batetshi, a clinical psychologist at Bryanwood.

I offer psychoanalytic psychotherapy and work with patients to deal with their current difficulties and help them identify patterns in their thoughts, behaviours, and choices that may lead to a lack of satisfaction in their lives.

My interests include helping individuals cope with childhood trauma, significant life transitions, interpersonal difficulties, as well as clinical disorders such as depression, anxiety and bipolar. I also work with individuals who desire personal growth and greater self-knowledge. In my couples work, I aim to help couples understand their relational dynamics and draw from such insights to foster growth and healing within a dyad.

Hi everyone, I'm Heather a clinical psychologist working at Bryanwood.

I instinctively formulate psychodynamically. However, I believe in meeting clients where they are and together framing treatment within a modality that fits the presenting problem and the client’s therapeutic goals. I hold firmly that one size does not fit all! This belief aligns with my integrative training that encourages viewing individuals as complex and dynamic beings, who struggle with interpersonal challenges rooted in multifaceted systems.

As your therapist, I will support and partner with you in a way that will deepen your self-knowledge by taking an open, honest, and non-judgemental stance when collaborating. My goal as a therapist is to help clients understand their limiting beliefs and problematic patterns that may be getting in the way of emotional and psychological functioning.

I am aware of and attuned to marginalised communities, including LGBTQIA+ and understand how experiences of repression also impact mental health and healing.

Hello there! I’m Mariné Bierman, one of the psychologists at Bryanwood.

My work as a psychotherapist is inspired by the following quote of a well-known psychoanalyst, Carl Jung: “In all chaos there is a cosmos, in all disorder a secret order.”

I believe in helping individuals uncover the hidden patterns in their experiences, transforming chaos into clarity and fostering growth and healing through an integrative therapeutic approach. Although I enjoy working from a psychodynamic approach, I hold and deeply value the belief that therapy is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. I believe that every individual is unique, deserving a personalised path to mental health and well-being that resonates with their needs.

In my practice, I warmly and empathically welcome clients to a journey where we embrace the order within the disorder, and work collaboratively to reveal the cosmos within their chaos.
