Adolescent athletes aren’t just “small adults.” Growth + training stress = unique risk. Here’s what to monitor each week 👇

🏋️ Weekly Training Load • Track total sessions + intensity, not just attendance

Count the hours of organized training per week (a 13 year old should not be going far beyond 13 hours per week)

Watch for sudden spikes (>10–15% jump week to week)

Build in at least 1-2 true recovery days weekly

📏 Peak Height Growth (Growth Spurts)

Measure height monthly (more often during rapid growth phases)

Rapid growth = higher injury risk window

Expect temporary drops in coordination & mobility

A nice rule to apply is letting your child do 1 less session a month if they have grown over 1 cm in the month previous. That session can then be reintroduced if growth has then slowed back down.

⚠️ Don’t Dismiss “Normal” Aches • Persistent soreness ≠ always “just growing pains”

Pain lasting >7 days needs attention

Track patterns: same spot, same drill, same session type

We see concerning tendon and apohyseal injuries often come late to clinic as pain was often being dismissed

✅ Simple Rule:
Growth + Load + Pain signals should always be reviewed together — not in isolation.

Well done to patients Molly Boyne and Aimee Clarke on being selected and to physio Aine Rowe for her work with the team.

Reactive strength = how quickly and efficiently your muscles and tendons can absorb and produce force. 🏃‍♂️💥

Ankle stiffness (in a good way!) is part of that. It’s what lets you spring off the ground instead of sinking into it. Think of it like having a strong, responsive “spring” in your lower leg.

After an ankle injury, that spring often gets weaker or slower to react. Traditional rehab builds strength and balance, but regaining that reactive power, the fast stretch-shortening ability can be the hardest part

That’s why we go beyond basic exercises in the later stages of rehab. We focus on speed, elasticity, and timing.

Here are some of the exercises we use in clinic to rebuild reactive strength and ankle stiffness 👇

Be patient it takes considerable time to improve.
