Why does your lower back hurt when you sit too long?
Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints I see in clinic, and prolonged sitting is often the trigger. Whether you’re at a desk, driving, or on the sofa, staying seated for hours can place significant strain on your spine.
Here’s why:
- Sitting increases pressure on your spinal discs (especially if you’re slouching)
- Poor posture switches off your core & glutes, overworking your lower back
- Less movement = less blood flow = more stiffness
- Tight hip flexors from sitting pull on your pelvis and strain your back
- Weak core muscles leave your lower back doing all the work
The good news? Sitting isn’t the enemy, staying still is.
✔️ Sit with feet flat and hips slightly higher than knees
✔️ Support the natural curve of your lower back
✔️ Keep screens at eye level
✔️ Move every 30 - 45 minutes (even 1-2 minutes helps!)
✔️ Strengthen your core and glutes
✔️ Stretch your hips and hamstrings
If your pain persists, travels into your leg, or affects sleep and daily life, it’s worth getting assessed.
With better posture, regular movement, and the right exercises, most sitting-related back pain can be managed and prevented.
