Why does your lower back hurt when you sit too long?

Lower back pain is one of the most common complaints I see in clinic, and prolonged sitting is often the trigger. Whether you’re at a desk, driving, or on the sofa, staying seated for hours can place significant strain on your spine.

Here’s why:

- Sitting increases pressure on your spinal discs (especially if you’re slouching)
- Poor posture switches off your core & glutes, overworking your lower back
- Less movement = less blood flow = more stiffness
- Tight hip flexors from sitting pull on your pelvis and strain your back
- Weak core muscles leave your lower back doing all the work

The good news? Sitting isn’t the enemy, staying still is.

✔️ Sit with feet flat and hips slightly higher than knees
✔️ Support the natural curve of your lower back
✔️ Keep screens at eye level
✔️ Move every 30 - 45 minutes (even 1-2 minutes helps!)
✔️ Strengthen your core and glutes
✔️ Stretch your hips and hamstrings

If your pain persists, travels into your leg, or affects sleep and daily life, it’s worth getting assessed.

With better posture, regular movement, and the right exercises, most sitting-related back pain can be managed and prevented.

Save this post if you sit for work 💻

Do your knees ache when you’re heading upstairs? You’re not alone, it’s a common issues we see in clinic.

When you climb stairs, your knee can take 3–6 times your body weight with every step. That’s a lot of pressure on one joint! If the muscles around your knee are weak, tight, or overworked, pain can quickly develop.

🚩 When to Get It Checked?
• Pain lasting more than 2 weeks
• Severe or worsening pain
• Swelling or bruising
• Struggling to put weight on the leg
• Pain stopping you from daily activities

Common Causes:
✔️ Ligament injuries – Often from twisting or awkward landings. Many respond well to rehab.
✔️ Tendinopathy – Overuse without enough recovery time.
✔️ Runner’s knee – Pain at the front of the knee, worse with stairs, squatting or sitting too long.
✔️ Osteoarthritis – Stiffness (especially in the morning) and pain with weight-bearing activity.

Knee pain doesn’t have to sideline you. With the right physiotherapy approach, most people recover fully and return to the activities they love, stronger and pain-free.
If stairs are becoming a struggle, don’t ignore it. Early treatment makes all the difference.

Most people will benefit from a range of other treatments for their back pain, physiotherapy being high among them. It is much more usual for patients to relieve symptoms by methods other than surgery, and physiotherapy can treat you for a range of problems associated with the pain.

Neck pain from phone use?
“Text Neck” is very common as we spend more time looking down at our phones and tablets. For every inch your head moves forward, the pressure on your neck increases, and your neck only has 7 vertebrae to support it.

Reduce your risk:
• Hold your phone at eye level
• Take movement breaks every 30 minutes
• Limit prolonged screen time where possible

If neck pain is affecting your day, our Chartered Physiotherapists can assess muscle imbalances and create a tailored treatment and exercise plan to get you moving comfortably again.

Google Review - "I really cannot stress how happy I am with the treatment I received here. I would highly recommend Leslie to anyone looking for a physio. I had previously seen a number of other people trying to resolve an issue with my back for about a year and a half and for the first time since I feel confident about getting back to training."

Bringing a baby into the world is an incredible experience, but it also places enormous physical demands on the body. Whether you had a vaginal birth or a caesarean section, your core and pelvic floor go through significant change during pregnancy and delivery. Many new mothers feel eager to “get strong again,” yet unsure about what exercises are safe or how to start.

This is where a structured, physiotherapy-led recovery programme makes all the difference. Rebuilding strength after childbirth is absolutely possible, but it must be done gradually, intentionally, and with the right guidance.

Your body has done something incredible. Now it deserves the chance to recover fully, with care and expert guidance.

After sitting in a single position for a number of hours day after day, and even year after year, our bodies may experience some undesirable changes in our physical qualities. Especially if you are not proactive in maintaining flexibility and mobility. Mobility is what allows your golf swing to move freely, generate speed and prevent injury or strain.

The main areas that tighten up while sitting at a desk for 8+ hours a day:

Hips

Lower back

Glutes

Shoulders

Personalising your mobility routine is the fastest way to achieve your goals in a safe manner. Why? No two golfers are the same; age, past injuries and current range of motion can all effect what routine you should be doing.

Clinic Director, Aileen Maguire, is a keen golfer herself, so she understands first hand the challenges and injuries golfers can face. She helps golfers stay at their best on the course.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with your hand feeling numb or “asleep”?

Many people experience this occasionally, and often it resolves with a shake or stretch. But if it happens regularly, it could be a sign that something in your body needs attention.

Numbness in the hands is usually caused by pressure on the nerves or restricted blood flow. At night, when we stay in one position for a long time, nerves in the arm, wrist, or neck can become compressed.

Getting assessed early is important, the sooner the underlying cause is addressed, the quicker you’ll find relief.

🏌️‍♂️ Lower Back Pain & Golf

Lower back pain is very common in golfers. Repetitive swinging, limited mobility, weak core or glutes, and poor recovery can all play a role.

Watch for signs like:
• Stiffness or aching after a round
• Sharp pain during the swing
• Reduced rotation

How physio helps:
We assess how your whole body moves, not just your back. Treatment may include hands-on therapy, mobility work, strength exercises and golf-specific rehab.
