Traditional Thai massage is believed to have started some 2,500 years ago by a semi-mythical figure named Jivaka Kumarabacca. This aspect of the medicinal practice was performed in the monasteries and by local health practitioners all over the area to promote well-being and to relieve a number of common and individual maladies. This monastic tradition continues to this day in monasteries such as Wat Pho.
