Bulky ski / expedition jacket.
Tiny compression cube.
No luggage worries.

Airlines are charging more and more for bags — I’d rather spend that money on experiences than luggage fees.

Compression packing cubes are a game changer.
(Vacuum bags work… but who’s hunting for a vacuum cleaner on holiday? Not me. I prefer zips.)

✔️Check your carry-on measurements carefully — some airlines are issuing €70 on-the-spot fines. Painful.

✔️Pack layers.
✔️Mix and match.
✔️Travel smarter. ❄️✈️

SHACKLETON – the story continues.

After leaving 22 men stranded on Elephant Island, six brave souls set sail across some of the harshest seas on Earth.

The James Caird voyage lasted 16 days, covering 1,300 km (800 miles). On 20 May 1916, they finally crashed onto land — South Georgia.

But they were on the wrong side of the island. They needed to reach the whaling station at Stromness on the east coast.

So Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean set out again — crossing unmapped mountains in freezing temperatures, exhausted and desperately under-equipped.

Against all odds… they made it.

From Stromness, word was finally sent to the world: they were alive.

But the story wasn’t over.

It took several attempts to fight through the sea ice, but in August 1916, Shackleton finally reached Elephant Island and rescued every single one of the 22 men he had left behind.

Not one life lost.

Sadly our intrepid adventurer - Ernest Shackleton died of a heart attack on his next expedition on board the Quest -5th January 1922

The Galapagos of the poles is how South Georgia has been described and these pictures will leave you in no doubt why.

South Georgia is one of the most remote and beautiful places on earth in my opinion. With snow capped mountainous, this slice of biodiversity heaven is a British Overseas Territory in the South Atlantic.

Discovered in 1775, it was once home to seal and whaling stations. Today there’s no permanent residents, but it hosts researchers for approx 7 months per year. Tourists are drawn to the island for both its massive king penguin, seal colonies and Sir Ernest Shackleton’s grave.

Key Details:

Location: Sub-Antarctic, roughly 1,290 km / 800 miles SE of the Falkland Islands.

Landscape: Over half is permanently ice-covered, with rugged mountains (Mount Paget) and emerald bays.

Wildlife: Home to massive populations of King penguins, seals, and albatrosses.

History: A hub for sealing in the 18th/19th centuries and whaling in the 20th.

Significance: Famous as the destination of Ernest Shackleton’s 1916 rescue mission.
The island is governed from King Edward Point and is managed as a strictly protected, largely pristine wilderness.

The only way to reach South Georgia Island is by cruise / expedition ship either from Ushuaia or the Falklands islands.

This is Sir Ernest Shackleton’s final resting place- Grytviken South Georgia.

We had the most incredible weather which highlighted the most incredible turquoise waters. The island is alive with seal pups playing in the long grass. Penguins stood watching the waves rolling in and out, the old whaling station, red from rush glistened in the sunshine.

While the remnants of the whaling station are filled with pain and hurt-it is an essential reminder for us to learn from our ancestors mistakes and to do our best to rectify the environmental impact act they enforced on the whale population.

This little island is a very special placez it’s a wonderful place for Sir Ernest and Frank Wild. Put it on your MUST DO destination list

Who else is buried there:

Frank Wild: His ashes were interred next to Shackleton on November 27, 2011, fulfilling a 72-year-old wish.

Whalers: The cemetery contains approximately 64 graves, mostly Norwegian whalers who died while working at the nearby Grytviken whaling station between 1904 and 1964.

Felix Artuso: A Submariner who died during the Argentine occupation of the island in 1982.

Typhoid Victims: Several graves from a 1912 typhoid epidemic.

Long haul is my favourite but let’s be honest - as we age it does become more wearing on our bodies.

How can you stay fresh and avoid a mid adventure slump ?

✔️Take quality time daily to relax and rejuvenate
✔️Schedule down days - at least one per week
✔️Doing “nothing” is doing something!
✔️Stop and smell the roses- experience the place you are in rather than just ticking off the boxes
✔️At a minimum - get a foot massage! If you can get a massage per week you are away…
✔️No Spa? Bring a face mask - lie on bed x 1 hour!
✔️Let the staff help you to carry luggage etc. They want to be of service- let them.

Im currently aboard Navigator- the facilities onboard are excellent! I highly recommend the spa and sauna !

Awesome Antarctica and the South Atlantic. I’m aboard the Atlas Ocean Navigator - where the food is plentiful and so are the rough seas! It’s all part of the fun.

12/02/2026

It was quite emotional to see Elephant island - to see where those poor men had to live - not knowing if they would ever be rescued. Lost in the Antarctic- cold and alone.

The story continues…
We sailed to Point Wild in treacherous sea. The boat has been rolling, visibility is poor and it’s freezing.

To think that 6 brave souls rowed from Elephant Island to South Georgia in these condition is unbelievable. 0It’s a miracle that the sea didn’t swallow them. Who ever was “with them” a guardian angel perhaps, “God” a higher power - it doesn’t matter - they did a very good job of lookokg after the crew of the James Caird

To withstand these conditions in a wooden boat is superhuman. To have the will and resilience to keep going is a superpower.

After their ship Endurance was crushed by ice in 1915, Sir Ernest Shackleton and his 27-man crew survived on floating ice for months before sailing three small lifeboats 60 miles to the inhospitable Elephant Island in April 1916.

After the ice floe holding their camp broke apart, the crew launched the James Caird, Dudley Docker, and Stancomb Wills lifeboats on April 9, 1916, aiming for Elephant Island.
Conditions: The 7-day, 60-mile journey was treacherous, involving freezing temperatures, high seas, and constant danger from surrounding pack ice.

Let me take you there

I’m in Antarctica on an expedition with - as we are a small yacht on an expedition we have been lucky enough to visit remote bays. The humpback whales have been putting on a super show for us by kindly breaching regularly and flicking their tails at every given opportunity.

Penguins are tending to their fluffy and very needy chicks while the seals are making the most of the summer weather.

This trip does not disappoint!

Drake’s Passage - the most notorious sea in the world…. However.. if you want to visit Antarctica you have to cross it.

How can you prepare for your crossing ?

I have 3 top tips!
