While having fun with sound effects, literacy, AAC and the slant stand in a session yesterday it reminded me of a key message…
“All children can learn to read and write” (Erickson and Koppenhaver, 2000)
There are no exceptions to this rule.
Prioritising literacy for all individuals, regardless of their primary mode of communication (mouth words or AAC), is essential.
When it comes to literacy, presuming competence is essential.
What does presuming competence mean?
Presuming competence means that we view all individuals as having the capacity to think, learn and to understand the world, regardless of any diagnosis that may have been provided.
Rather than assuming that an individual does not understand or is incapable of carrying out certain tasks, we believe that the individual requires supports and systems to help them succeed.
While literacy instruction is a key component for those who use mouth words as their primary form of communication, literacy instruction typically is not as robust for non-speaking individuals.
What are the ways you have targeted literacy for the non-speaking individuals you work with?
