It’s hay fever season 🤧
Hayfever season can run from April to September with tree and grass pollen being one of the main causes of symptoms.
The most common symptoms include sneezing, running nose, congestion, itchy and runny eyes. Symptoms can be mild to moderate and severe.
Top tips for dealing with hay fever symptoms include applying Vaseline around your nose to trap pollen, wearing wrap around sunglasses out doors, staying indoors where possible, keeping windows and doors shut, catching clothes after being out doors and showering to wash pollen away. If these tips are not enough to keep symptoms at bay then we have a range of products that can help.

Oral antihistamines are often the best way at treating hay fever symptoms. They are once a day tablets and are non-drowsy.

There are a number of nasal washes such Sterimar and Neilmed which help remove pollen and bulild up from the nose, these can be used with nasal sprays such as Otrivine (decongestant) or flixonase (steroid) to reduce inflammation and congestion in the nose.

Finally for those that suffer from itchy/stingy/runny eyes there are a number of drops such as opticrom and optrex which can help relieve these symptoms.

If you need any advice on how to treat hay fever symptoms call us on 01 5510001 or pop in store.

Psoriasis and eczema are two skin conditions that often cause confusion.
Psoriasis occurs when a person’s immune system triggers skin cells to grow faster than the usually would causing dead skin cells to built up on your skin. Psoriasis can cause red or silvery scaly patched on your skin which can often be thicker and more inflamed than with eczema. Psoriasis is an auto-immune condition which tends to go through cycles.

Eczema is a condition where patches of skin become inflamed, itchy, cracked and rough. In some cases the skin may appear scaly oozing or crusty. It is not an auto immune condition and can often occur in babies and the can grow out of it or it may flare up now and again. Eczema can be caused by a number of factors such as environmental factors, bacterial exposure, allergens or if there is a family history.

Both conditions can be triggered by infections, cold weather, smoking or stress.

Tips for keeping the skin in a good condition to prevent flare ups include:
Keeping your skin clean and moisturised whirl avoiding harsh/fragranced soaps. Emollient ointment/diprobase are brilliant products for adding moisture to the skin and breaking down hard scaly skin.
Applying moisturising fragrance free creams can also help symptoms such as itchiness and dryness. Using an antihistamine can also help symptoms such a itchiness.
Avoid taking very long hot baths or showers.
Take steps to reduce stress such as gentle exercise, meditation, mindfulness.

Both these conditions can flare up and moisturising creams/emollients may not be enough to treat the flare up. In this case a steroid cream or further treatment may be necessary. This is why it is always important to talk to your doctor or pharmacist for further advice if a flare up is not clearing up.
