Chronic Pain Ireland

Chronic Pain Ireland CPI National charity (RCN: 20028022 and Chy No 10779) providing information & support services. Established in 1992, Chronic Pain Ireland CLG.
(1)

In Europe 1 in 5 people live with chronic pain, in Ireland that figure is higher and estimated at 1 in 3. To create a greater awareness of Chronic Pain and to provide relevant information and support for those living with the condition, for their families and friends. is the only national organisation providing information and support services to people living with Chronic Pain. We are a registered charity, and we work with all stakeholders including those living with chronic pain, their families and carers, health professionals, students, researchers and others interested in chronic pain. CPI has demonstrated professional leadership in Ireland and throughout Europe by raising awareness of chronic pain, educating in methods of dealing with the condition, and advocating for the needs of people living in chronic pain. We advocate for multi-disciplinary treatment centres, improved health services and changes to the educational curriculum so that healthcare providers are more aware of the condition and the challenges of diagnosing, treating and managing the condition. We adhere to the principles of good corporate governance. We are transparent and compliant with all regulatory requirements. The Scheme to Support National Organisations is funded by the Government of Ireland through the Department of Rural and Community Development

CPI gratefully acknowledges SSNO funding and the ongoing support of Pobal and the Department of Rural and Community Development under the Programme and Scheme to Support National Organisations (SSNO) 2022-2025

โš™๏ธ๐ŸŒฑ Living with chronic pain means learning how to actively manage your pain.

It can be challenging, but over time, you can increase what youโ€™re able to do and improve your overall quality of life. While future work and social pursuits may differ from those you once enjoyed, life can still hold interest, self-worth, beauty, and hope.

โœจ Helpful Tips for Self-Management of Chronic Pain:

1๏ธโƒฃ Build daily routines that support your wellbeing and give structure to your self-care
2๏ธโƒฃ Set realistic goals and establish baselines for regaining fitness

3๏ธโƒฃ Recognise stress as the bodyโ€™s response to a threatโ€”it can heighten pain

4๏ธโƒฃ Break the cycle of anxiety & negativity to prevent catastrophising

5๏ธโƒฃ Understand your condition to feel more in control

6๏ธโƒฃ Use distractions to shift focus away from pain

7๏ธโƒฃ Do things you love and engage in meaningful activities

8๏ธโƒฃ Think about what you can do, rather than what you canโ€™t

9๏ธโƒฃ Balance Fillers vs. Drainers โ€“ Fillers build up energy reserves, while drainers deplete them

We are examining how parents who are also caregivers for their child with a chronic condition (such as chronic pain) manage their roles as caregivers and parents, in addition to other roles commonly held (spouse, employee, etc). Daily Role Intersections And how these roles and responsibilities can intersect on any given day. Much of the literature surrounding caregiving seems to focus on the word โ€˜burdenโ€™, and attributes it to the role of caregiving. We aim to see if burden can also be caused by role overlap, as well as a lack of appropriate social and formal support. By doing so, we can enhance interventions aimed at supporting caregivers by viewing them and their experiences holistically.

๐ŸŒป This complimentary Sunflower Lanyard is issued to all members of Chronic Pain Ireland. The card is a specific Hidden Disabilities Sunflower for those living with โ€˜chronic painโ€™ and helps make an invisible condition a bit more visible.

๐Ÿ’ก We often face barriers daily, including a lack of understanding and negative attitudes, and the Sunflower lanyard discreetly identifies that we may need support, help, or just a little more time in shops, transport, or public spaces.

๐ŸŒŽ The Sunflower is a globally recognised symbol for non-visible disabilities, also known as hidden disabilities or invisible disabilities. The lanyard is very useful when โœˆ๏ธ๐Ÿš‰ travelling or at those times where we may need a little extra time or some assistance. Some of our members have reported a greater level of assistance in a hospital setting, also.

Events like this help bridge the gap between research and real life, shaping more inclusive, community-based approaches to chronic pain management ๐Ÿ’ก
