I love Kimchi and thought I need to make sure I eat more of this stuff for all its super health benefits. I got stuck on trying to think how I would incorporate it into my diet regularly.

Now, I’ve gotten into the habit of taking the jar out of the fridge and having a couple of teaspoons while I’m making dinner 😃 should have done this ages ago! Anyway… this is a great habit to begin for many reasons.

🥬 Fermented foods are a great source of probiotics which are excellent for your gut.

🥬When your gut is in good shape, this benefits your immune system (70% of your immune system is in your gut).

🥬Kimchi contains compounds that can help reduce inflammation. (Inflammation is at the heart of every disease)

🥬If you find it hard not to pick while you’re preparing food, this habit could be a game changer for weight loss goals as kimchi is low in calories but nutrient dense 💪🏻

So.. don’t wait as long as I did to eat more of this! Look for kimchi by in your local supermarket.

Home from sunny Mallorca to a wet and rainy day in Dublin. In my teens and twenties, I wanted eternal sunshine, but now, I love the change of seasons. I will miss eating delicious seafood on the beach but I’m equally looking forward to soups and stews and all the lovely food that come with Autumn 🍂

Books like these beautiful almanacs I buy each year have helped me embrace the longer nights. These books are full of interesting seasonal information and delicious recipes. Lia has a beautiful way of helping us look at the year as it unfolds. Each year a different theme is chosen for the almanacs, and you learn so much about what is going on around you, in the hedgerows or in the heavens throughout the year.

So if you’re mourning the end of summer, I recommend these beautiful books to keep you inspired and help you welcome in the colder months and what each season has to offer ✨

CUT UP YOUR PLANTS FOR BETTER NUTRITION

It seems that chopping up your fruits & vegetables can actually make them more 'nutritious'. We've long heard this tidbit about broccoli and sulforaphane, but now we see that several types of plant foods respond to the mechanical stress of cutting, dicing, and even shredding by making more phenolic compounds, and thereby, increasing their antioxidant activity.

In fact, the more stress, the better, or at least in carrots, where slicing led to a increase (1.67 times) in phenolic content, but shredding resulted in more than a 5-time increase!

🧾 Receipts are suspected to be a major source of our exposure to BPA and BPS.

These are hormonal disrupting chemicals which can be found in reusable plastic food containers and thermal paper used to print shopping receipts, movie & concert tickets and boarding passes.

These chemicals mimic our own hormones disrupting the body’s normal functioning.

You were probably aware of BPA being present in hard plastic water bottles and are now probably surprised to learn that receipts are problematic too 🙈 sorry!

But... here’s what you can do.

🌱 don’t take a receipt if you don’t need it
🌱 if you need a receipt, fold it print side in and store away separately from cash
🌱 wash hands after handling
🌱 ask for a digital receipt
🌱 if you’re a business issuing receipts, switch to phenol free receipt paper.

Not something you need to worry about when you visit the 🌳

A recently-published, small clinical trial in older adults with mild cognitive impairment indicated that those individuals who took in relatively higher amounts of anthocyanins in the diet (from blue, purple, red plant foods) performed better on memory tests compared with the group taking in lower amounts of dietary anthocyanins.

Have you heard of preventative medicine?

By definition - it’s efforts are directed towards the prevention of disease, either in the individual or in the community as a whole.

Preventative medicine can be practiced by you.. in the management of your own health. How amazing is that?!

Don’t wait for a diagnosis. If your doctor has told you you are borderline anything (diabetes, high cholesterol, hypothyroidism etc.) work with a nutritional therapist to help you optimise your health. About 80% of chronic diseases are driven by lifestyle factors such as diet and exercise so it makes sense to optimise your diet to prevent chronic disease development.

This is available to you today! Who cares if it is not yet available to you through your healthcare system (which when you think about it, looks after you when you’re sick).

🥗Nutritional Therapy is an evidence based approach which applies nutrition science in the promotion of optimal health.

🧬 It recognises and embraces the fact that no two people are the same.

🦠 It seeks to find the root cause of illness and makes a dietary and lifestyle protocol from that basis.

This article is a must read, and a very important one too. Look for it online with the Guardian.

Read it to be reminded of the joy of real food and how paying more attention to what all five senses are telling you about your food choices. Let’s not continue to become more disconnected from our food and our environment, and let’s start trusting our own senses again.

Bee mentions a quote from a favourite food writer of mine, Michael Pollan “ If you’re concerned about your health, you should probably avoid food products that make health claims. Why? Because a health claim on a food product is a good indication that it’s not really food, and food is what you want to eat”

Bee acknowledges the challenges we face (time poor and squeezed incomes) and gives cause for hope too 🤩 read it! 🙌🏻🙌🏻

Do you add herbs and spices to meals daily?

Herbs and spices are a quick and easy way to increase nutrient density in your diet and who doesn’t want more flavour in their meals?! 🤷🏻‍♀️

I find the best way to make this a regular thing is to get into the habit of matching foods and dishes that you are eating daily, and find a herb and/or spice that enhances the flavour of that meal so you’ll automatically combine them without thinking.

See below for some ideas - I cannot eat these foods without these herbs and spices!

🥣 Porridge with cinnamon and/or vanilla- I usually grate apple into porridge and match with cinnamon or try grating pear and matching it with vanilla 😃

🌿 Spinach and nutmeg - next time you wilt some spinach, grate some nutmeg while cooking. Too tasty!

🍳Eggs are so versatile and are delicious with chives, dill or basil and of course... lots of black pepper!

Garlic can be added easily to many dishes when cooking, especially curries and stir-fries - but if I’ve limited time and need a quick lunch, I’ll rub a whole garlic clove over some sourdough toast (thankfully for my clients, most consultations happen over zoom or phone these days 😂, no worries about garlic breath!) add some olive oil, chopped tomato, basil, red onion and mozzarella.

🍠Smoked paprika is delicious with sweet potato fries - and freshly chopped rosemary with regular homemade roast potatoes

There is now, plenty of evidence that herbs and spices possess an abundance of health benefits (anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidant, anti-carcinogenic etc.)

What herbs and spices are you using daily?

Snacks! What are your go-tos? Confused by all the options in the “healthy” snack section of the supermarket? The good news is, we have lots more half decent options - the bad news is, they’re not all that healthy so choose wisely! The less ingredients and the less processed the better, and be mindful of sugar content. Don’t be fooled by the big sell (high in protein 💪🏻 gluten free / plant based 🌱) these claims don’t necessarily make them healthy.

The best snack options will always be real food (eg. fruit & nuts / hummus & veggies) but sometimes we get caught out or fancy something sweet. These chocolate dipped almonds are a good choice for those times 😉😋

Would love to know your favourites 👇🏻
