Four years since the escalation of the war in Ukraine, over 9 million people in affected areas face the direct impacts of war, with access to electricity, health care, and safe shelter remaining fragile. Sustained humanitarian support is critical.

In Ireland, over 84,000 Ukrainians are now building new lives. Throughout this time, IOM Ireland, alongside partners, has been there to support those affected and continues to provide assistance.

Languages travel with people, and today, on International Mother Tongue Day, IOM celebrates the linguistic richness that migrants bring, and recognizes the challenges of integrating into new local contexts.

In 2025, IOM Ireland's cultural mediators supported international protection applicants in 21 languages, creating a bridge between languages and cultures to make the asylum process more accessible and fair.

This year’s International Migrants Day explored the theme “My Great Story: Cultures and Development,” highlighting the power of human mobility to enrich cultures and support development.

To mark the occasion, the IOM Ireland Mental Health and Psychosocial Support (MHPSS) team organised a week of activities at the Citywest reception centre. From painting and storytelling sessions to sporting activities and cultural performances, the week painted a picture of migration as a story of resilience and hope.

The events served as a reminder of migration’s ability to promote progress, preserve heritage, and inspire creativity.

“What brought me to Ireland? I was following the music.”

From Patagonia, the southernmost inhabited region in the world, to Ennis on the west coast of Ireland, Clara’s great story shows how migration doesn’t dilute cultures, it enriches them!

Through Irish trad music, she found community and a way to share her Argentinian roots. Playing the tin whistle like an Andean flute or teaching Latin American guitar techniques to Irish children, Clara blends her heritage with Ireland’s musical traditions, creating something new and unique.

This International Migrants Day , let’s celebrate the talent, creativity, and culture migrants bring to the communities that welcome them around the world.
