We genuinely love the Pilates Method and want to pass on to you the benefits that we ourselves get from practising this amazing system of exercises.

The quote in the video is Joseph Pilates’ words from his book ā€˜Return To Life Through Contrology’.

Springs or no springs?! Let’s look at what they were designed to do…

Joseph Pilates created the Mat order of exercises before any of the apparatus was designed. Guess what - Mat, done in the original way it was designed to be done, is HARD! For beginners - it’s the hardest part of the Pilates System! Joe was using his hands and his body weight to give people feedback on where to move from and also for help or resistance. He’s quoted as saying that he created the machines so he didn’t have to keep using use his own body, that the apparatus could give the feedback he gave! He said the springs were like extra muscles, they give the body extra support!

The apparatus - the SPRINGS - they’re your personal Pilates partner! They support you and assist you in some exercises. They give feedback to connect to the right places. They allow you to move in bigger ranges with control that you might not have yet without them.

Mat, nowadays, often gets broken down from the big movements it was designed to be. It made Mat Pilates more accessible to more people - amazing - BUT this can lead to the original intention of the exercises being lost 😢

So! If you’ve been doing broken down versions of Mat exercises and want to build up to doing the bigger expression of those… GET ON THE SPRINGS! With the support of the springs you’ll be able to move your body in it’s full range, with support and feedback. The springs will help you to build the strength and flexibility needed to do the big, natural, full body movements of the original Mat order.

So! Springs or no springs..? I say BOTH! Your body will get stronger, more flexible and more balanced with a combination of both.

You’ll meet your teacher, fill in a form to let them know of any issues or goals you want them to be aware of.
You’ll usually be brought first to the Reformer and learn some Basic Pilates principles and Basic Reformer exercises.

Hi šŸ‘‹ I’m Anna and I own Pilates Centre.

People often get confused when they meet me in the studio as they assume the owner should be older? Imagine how they used to react when I opened Pilates Centre in 2009. I was 26! A baby! Pilates Centre opened its doors 16 YEARS AGO THIS MONTH 🄳

Let’s reflect…

2009: Pilates Centre started in an open bright space above a hardware shop in Glasnevin. The full years rent was equal to what I pay today just for my commercial rates 🫠

2012: I opened a second studio in Clontarf! Both studios thrived!

2012: I recruited teachers for the first time and trained them to be able to teach what I taught. I didn’t do this good enough… I wasn’t proud of the standard of teaching being offered under my name and I let teachers go and I closed my Glasnevin studio 😱 NOBODY had complained - everyone actually loved the classes and the Glasnevin studio was at capacity - BUT I have very high standards and don’t accept less.
Clontarf got my FULL ATTENTION! I basically LIVED in the studio!
I built an AMAZING team!! One of those team members, Jessy Babin, introduced me to Classical Pilates. I NEEDED TO KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT IT!!!

2013: I retrained with The Pilates Center in Boulder, Colorado. I hosted their teacher training program so I could share Classical Pilates with more people!
The studio transitioned from being ā€˜contemporary’ style classes to what you see now!

2014: I created my own Classical Teacher training program and graduated more fab teachers who are doing amazing things.

2015 and 2017: I had 2 kids ā¤ļøā¤ļø

TODAY! Our Clontarf studio is FAR MORE than a place to go to do Pilates. It’s a COMMUNITY for everyone who wants to move better and feel better.

I’ve learned SO MUCH!! I learn from the amazing studio team, from Pilates mentors around the world, from the people I teach in every lesson and from our trainees. Oh, and of course, from my mistakes, there’s been lots of learning there!

THANK YOU TO EVERYONE who chooses to come to our studio. Whether you’re with us for 16 years (I see you all šŸ˜) or just started today - we’re here to support you on your Pilates journey.

I’m excited for the next chapter ✨

Thank you to the Cadillacs and Towers for giving the lift needed in Teaser ā¤ļø

If you take group classes at our studio DO take advantage of all of our different class options! Each piece of apparatus supports and challenges you differently and will help you to move your body into balance āš–ļø

Mat and Reformer may be the stars of the show BUT they would be nothing without their support acts (Cadillac, Barrels, Chairs and everything else 🤩)

Example: There’s a modification in the Pilates world - I’d say it’s even become a ā€˜position’ that’s become an identifier of Pilates in the Pilates world - called ā€˜Table Top’. It’s a 90 degree leg position you get put in when lying on your back to modify lots of lying on your back Pilates exercises like the 100, Single Leg Stretch etc… I originally practiced and trained in a different ā€˜style’ of Pilates and this Table Top thing was a rule to live by!

Let me tell you… Since I retrained in Classical Pilates I have NEVER found the need, EVER, to put people in this static position. I’ve not found a good enough result from it to tell me it’s getting anyone closer to the goal of the exercises it’s being used in and I am not seeing it sufficiently prepare the muscles needed to progress these exercises to eventually move beyond that position šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø Pilates is DYNAMIC so I don’t make ANY ā€˜static positions’ the rule for any MOVEMENT! Table Top gave me no why once I learned to teach BODIES and HOW THEY MOVE and not ā€˜exercises and positions’.

So yes, in Classical Pilates the only place ā€˜Table Top’ doesn’t exist…. NOT because we don’t modify (that’s a myth…) but because there’s SO MANY BETTER OPTIONS available to me and to the progress of my clients than that static position.

Where might I sometimes teach something that might look like a Table Top? There’s some fab Eve Gentry ā€˜pre-pilates’ exercises in this EXACT position BUT there’s resistance created with the hands to get people to that goal of connecting to their deepest core muscles. Then the sensations it awakes I CUE in the following movements while they MOVE! Who wants a video?!

If you teach or do Table Top and you have a WHY for why you’re doing it, what it’s helping, what it’s prepping for… teach it! do it! I’m just finding more and more teachers DON’T know why, they were just told to, and I think clients deserve something better than that.

Side note - there’s a movement called ā€˜Table Top’ on the Wunda Chair - it’s amazing šŸ™Œ It’s nothing related to the 90degree leg thing…
