A TOTAL of 202 organ transplants were carried out in 2025, thanks to the selflessness of 68 deceased and 29 living organ donors and their families.

Letterkenny man’s anxious wait for heart transplant

Organised by hospital-based Organ Donation Nurse Managers, who advocate for the potential organ donor and their wishes, a recent National Organ Donation Event brought together 100 critical care healthcare professionals from all health regions across the country.

Gillian Shanahan, Organ Donation Nurse Manager, HSE West and North West, told the gathering that the event was: “dedicated to the perspective of the potential organ donor and their family, and to supporting ICU teams who guide families through this profoundly difficult time”.

How wonderful to meet and chat with Denis and Martina Goggin of the Organ Donation - Strange Boat Donor Foundation at the Irish Kidney Association 40th Annual Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance in Dublin today.

If you don’t know their names, you’re certainly familiar with the beautiful Circle of Life Organ Donor Commemorative Garden in Salthill which they founded in honour of their son Éamonn. Éamonn’s organs were donated for transplantation in 2006, giving four people a second chance to live full and healthy lives 💜

At today’s service, Denis and Martina were presented with a basket filled with the names of organ donors on biodegradable cards. These will now be brought to the Circle of Life Garden 🥰
